Northernguitarguy's point is major. There's hum, and there's HUM. I don't like P90s much, and of course they hum, but unless there is something way off, it is not as load, distracting, or bad as what you describe. Plenty of players who love P90 tones get by with them as stage guitars because, again, it should not be that bad! There are too many possibilities for hum-generation than I want to write about, but the info is all over the web. You're not standing under a fluorescent light, playing along with an old TV two feet away while using an ungrounded tube amp next to an old electric fan, are you?

I Was kind of thinking the same thing... maybe its not the usual ground floor noise he is hearing, hell maybe there is a cold solder join on the harness...

Can you take a few pics of the cavity? Plenty if light and a couole diff. Angles... Just to give us a look and make sure, i cant come and star ground your house but we can help with a few eliminations.

Also if you can try a different single coil axe... is the problem still there.

Darn, I didn't think of taking a cavity pic after I did the extra ground shield soldering. Here's a couple shots of when I originally wired it though.

I really don't think the hum is out of the ordinary loud, I've heard other P90 guitars and its about the same. When it's the worst is in my living room with the TV, PVR, Computer etc. I've had different amps and they hum the same, different guitars to make sure too. My tele hums but not quite as loud as the P90 but that's par for a Tele. Heck, in my living room on high distortion my LP hums a tiny bit.

    I think I'm just gonna give a Kinman P90 a shot and see what I think.. 20170227_192150.jpg 20170227_200215.jpg 20170227_200341.jpg

The noise from a P90 is part of the sound.

I agree some noise is part of the sound to some degree but cant hurt to check a few things, its a bit blury but looks like the volume pot ground lug may be a bad join/need to be resoldered, can we get a close up of the vol pots lugs.

The best answer on the thread and not even a like or comment. Ha.

To those that say turn your gain down, I say....none of your business telling someone to compromise their settings.

To those that say, single coil noise is fine....part of the sound. Well, if it's low enough it can be tolerable, but it's sure as hell not desirable.

To those that say people who complain about the noise are whiners......

Oh, and not that its related just a tip, if you sanded the back of the pot... pots are tinned, which makes them easier to solder to, no need to sand

Point made. However, have you ever jammed in a band with a single-coil guitar player and heard the hum in the mix to the point of being bothered? Under normal conditions, that just doesn’t make sense to me.

Yes of course. I used to be one. My first guitars when I started gigging were strats. The hum was unbearable at rock level distortion.

Your experience tops mine, by miles....err..kilometres. I just wonder how Hendrix, Blackmore, and others dealt with it. I’ve never heard my P90 hum in the mix. Even playing in a school classroom under a ceiling with plenty of fluorescent lights. :dunno:

I just saw Joe B last week and he played Strats and Teles, I was wondering how his sound had no hum at all either.. I guess at that level, there's some super high tech sound stuff that would filter it out eh? (Yes, I'm Canadian..) :dude:

It depends on the level of distortion you're talking about. Joe B plays mostly at the blues/rock level....which is more like a hot amp than hot distortion.

So, why humbuckers have been invented? And why noiseless pickups?

JK. We have all our experience and each is legit. :)

I just wanted to add that I go back and forth between regular single coils and their noiseless counterparts without any problem... But I can confirm that where I live (in Europe), some playing situations and places can be extremely noisy. We are not all equal when it comes to electric power supply. :)

So a small update....Last week I said F#$@ it and brought my Junior to band practice cause it's just way to fun of a Rock machine not to bring out of the house! :dude:

I really focused on volume control turning it off and on as quick as I can between songs and in pauses and I don't think anyone really noticed the hum that much which is sweet cause the distortion from my P90 is just so clear and harmonic.. I'm tempted to play it at our Gig this week but I also just completely rewired my Standard (posted in another thread) so I'm not sure which one I want to bring out yet.

On another note....I had inquired about getting a noiseless P90 from Vineham Pickups here in Canada and he's gonna start making me one this week to try. Just like most noiseless pickups, this one is a humbucker disguised as a P90 I think but it's supposed to sound quite convincing so it's worth a try. His pickups are phenomenal sounding so why not..

Has anyone had any real experience with noiseless P90's actually having a "similar" attack and harmonic sound as a real P90? As I get more tone experienced, I can really tell how different and original a P90 sound is and am falling in love with them more and more as time goes on..

Looking at the pics... im certainly wondering how well those solder joins are, take her in for a quick look over if you can... it very well may make things better to have the ground joins varified, id at least reheat the vol ground lug solder join... looks like its not bonded to the pot casing but maybe it is under the lug where we cant see :dunno: . Anyhowza have fun bloke and keep rockin

I don't know if my experience must be considered as "real" and I'll probably sound like a broken record but my answer is...
    -No with the P90's sized humbuckers that I've here (1 Bill Lawrence and 3 models of DiMarzio, knowing that they haven't been designed to mimic a P90 tone);
-Yes with the Kinman... but FWIW, it's not a regular humbucker: it's a single coil stacked on a "noise sensor" coil measuring only 600 Ohms. The core of this bottom bobbin is made of laminated steel, like in transformers, in order to minimize Eddy currents. It's a unique patented design and IME, it works in a unique way compared to other noiseless designs.
[BTW, I've played it in front of audiences counting 50 to 500 people and nobody has never told me that my P90Hx didn't sound like a real one... ]

I won't claim that any Kinman is sounding 100% like my regular P90's... but as I'm accustomed to modify pickups, I'd venture to say that a different alloy of AlNiCo in a same P90 can make it sound more different from itself than a Kinman compared to the real thing.

Now, this testimonial is still NOT an encouradgment to order a Kinman for a simple reason: I don't know what are the LRC and Gauss specs of your P90 since I've not tested it with my DMM and Teslameter. But I know for a fact how "real" P90's can vary... so any advice would be a shoot in the dark.

At least I'll try to post some data illustrating my statements IF time permits. Thx for your understanding and patience about that.

EDIT: as I don't want to sound like a shill, I'll mention another "technically original" solution :
    http://www.lacemusic.com/PS900.php
But I've no experience at all with this one.

What about a noise gate set to a low threshold?

Set just high enough to cut out the hum between songs but not affect anything when you actually start playing. I've tried that with some success.
