Also, I’m glad that everything that comes outta my mouth isn’t recorded for a buncha nerds online to pick apart.

I'm a hack, with or without pedals, but it's true that pedals can sometimes make my hack playing sound a bit better.

That being said, Joe B can fly a kite for all I care.
A few short years ago I couldn't make anything that could pass for music, now I can.

I haven't put 35 years of effort into learning to play, and it's true that I could put more effort in now, but I don't see how that means that I'm some kind of fake or poseur or whatever.
    I play music for me.
For the pure enjoyment that it brings me.
I've never attempted to make a living at it, and I never will.

Joe's statement is coming from an elitist point of view, imo.
Everybody should play music the way they want to play music, it's called freedom of expression.
Joe is more than entitled to his opinion and his choice of gear, as we all are, but just because someone might approach things from a different perspective doesn't mean they're doing it wrong.

I wish I knew that learning an instrument was a competition before I picked one up, I've never been very good at sports. :laugh2:

BTW Joe, I bought your limited edition fuzz face, one of 2,000 made or some crap like that.
Thanks for taking my money and then proceeding to call me lazy and an insult to those who came before me for it.
    Freaking hypocrite.

On a related note, anybody want to buy a gently used Joe B fuzz face?

I'm not mad, not offended either.
I just think it's very pompous to tell others how they should create their art, regardless of the moderate success one may have enjoyed in the field.

I think it's funny for a guy with Signature Pedals to talk sh*t about using pedals.

I also think it's funny the pedal says, "Bonamassa Crybaby".

    :laugh2:

...course anyone who knows me will attest that I'm pretty easily amused.

How many guitar players does it take to play a solo?

Eleven. One to play the solo and ten others to stand in the audience with their arms crossed and say, "I could play it better."

To be fair, I think Joe posted this after leaving my place. I had run three Line 6 M13's into David Byrne's pedal board.

Hit a chord, went for a walk on the board.

Hey Joe.... where you going with that gun in your hand?

Speaking of David Byrne..... this video fits with this topic.

I agree with much of what he says.

JB is talking out of his ass on this one. Guitarists should use what they want to create the sound they like. If you only played blues, country and soul you could do it with a little reverb and natural overdrive and it would sound great. Other styles of music demand other guitar tones

The playing I enjoy most is guitar - chord - amp, but the progrock band I play in demand certain effects. Should I refuse and be replaced by another guitarist?

    An analogy. :laugh2:

I shouldn't have to mention this since it's Eddie Murphy in Raw but... NSFW.

It's about time and place, and remembering that they're the frosting, not the ... uh ... cake. When I want delay, I don't want to have to stutter-pick. How'm I gonna get a little chorus on this thing?

Tools are tools. Use them as needed. Not everything needs the hammer.

lol, that was the first thing that, ahem, popped into my thoughts when I read the OP.

I'm gonna go google it after I post but this is a good time to ask MLP a question I have been wondering about for a while. I am interested in what y'all have to say.

Joe talks about staring at one's shoes . . . what is "shoegazer" music?

    Peace

guys who stand there, noodling, staring at their shoes and not really moving at all. You can find it in a number of different genres.

(he's saying it to mean they're staring at their pedals.)

So not really a genre but more an effects-heavy, trance-like stage presence?
