I was reading a blog from The Who's lead guitarist Simon Townshend. He and Zak Starkey stopped into the House of Guitars before a local concert.

Simon wrote about the shop. In the article, he says:

We visited a local guitar and record store called, The House Of Guitars. We were there for a few hours. The place is rammed with gems, new and old – and some real rarities. In fact, Zak bought a Holiday (Harmony) bass and an Epiphone guitar – two instruments I’d never seen or heard of. I bought some vinyl and a couple of books (Neil Young and Mott The Hoople). The place is so large that one really needs a full day there to look around and try stuff out.

Can you really be an international touring pro and have never heard of Epiphone?

I find it hard to believe, given Epiphone's history, but who knows? He's a spoiled kid who had the best guitars ever since he started playing (I'm sure Pete bought him the occasional high end guitar). By the time Simon turned 5 Pete was already a Rock Star. Hell, maybe he's just never spent much time in guitar stores as his guitars may have always been provided to him.

This also may be part of the reason why...

    From Wikipedia
Maybe he's just not a Gibson/Les Paul kind of guy?

The only thing that makes sense is that maybe Zak bought a MODEL of Epiphone that Simon had never heard of.

How can you grow up watching The Beatles and not know of Epiphone?

That may be it, and he just wasn't clear in his comment. One would hope... ;)

    A great question.

It is because Epiphone in the original Grande scheme of things was Merely to Be Forgotten over time (IMHO)
after being bought by their rival. Fortunately, things have not remained that way
especially since the current owners seem to like making a profit from that 'lesser known brand'. People like myself, the little guy, really appreciate the opportunity to own something nice that looks good, plays good, and has a tiny bit o' history to it. So Thank You to the Gibson Family of Brands for keeping Epiphone alive and well.

HOG is a great store. Visit it if you ever get the opportunity, very cool place. Been there many times over the years. It's been there a long, long time.
