A friend of mine recently learned a hard lesson.

I thought most folks knew that any kind of bug spray or lotion with Deet in it will just eat right though a lacquer finish.

He now has an almost new Martin D-18 with some pretty bad damage.

If ya got a poly finished guitar, it'll be fine......but if ya got a Gibby, Martin, or any other lacquer finished instrument or furniture, be careful.

Just an FYI, in cased ya didn't know.

I've had deet melt the plastic on the doors of my truck, melt fishing lures, and melt lantern cases.

I would not think it would play well with almost any kind of wood finish.

    :dunno:

Alcohol of any kind will really make a mess of lacquer. Another thing that will make such a mess is storing a lacquer guitar in its case for long with a leather strap attached. Where the strap touches the finish can cause it to bubble.

I learned this lesson as well, on my Gibson J-185 acoustic.

I let a guy play it who had bug repellent on. High concentration of DEET. It melted the lacquer and dulled it quite a bit. Fortunately, it was able to be wet-sanded and buffed out to new.

Yeah. Bug juice will melt lacquer. No doubt about it.

So when you've got an outdoor thing, and you're going to play or have a guitar around for others, be sure to use a cheaper, poly-finished beater.

Bug juice will not bother poly finishes at all.

    No.

That distinction belongs to me. They call me "Ladykiller fireside guy antebellum".

    Won't work like acetone tho..

Acetone is the base solvent for lacquer thinner. It will remove it right now.

Alcohol takes a while longer to damage a finish.
