    Howdy,
My second LP is an Epi Alpine White Custom. I don't know what year it is but the white is quite yellow, I'm guessing 90's....? Made in Korea, great axe. I'm thinking about pulling the paint off it and having it resprayed (as I don't especially like the white/gold). Just wondering if these guys have the maple cap or what to expect?
    Cheers,
    Rob.

Alder Cap? Cool - hadn't even considered that. I wonder how it looks under the paint. I'm a fan of plain tops!

Don't hold out hope that it'll look pretty. It could be made from many pieces with no attempt made to hide the differences in colour between them, (why would they bother to when it's being painted a solid colour anyway) and the grain of alder is more homogeneous and not as interesting as something like maple or ash.

Thanks for the advice - if I strip it and don't like it I'll probably go the gold-top :)

Well... you never know. A guy I know stripped his ugly Zakk (MIC) and uncovered a really nice looking maple veneer. He managed to get the poly off without ruining it and then he tru-oiled it. Looks stunning.

There was once a photo floating around somewhere of a maple cap on an Epiphone that looked like creamy peanut butter spread, all whipped up and applied
I kid you not. Haven't seen it in some time.
But this would not be what I would want to witness if I should ever see one in person

Then, there's this thread from 2009, where a guy stripped the paint off his Epi Custon, as he was sanding....it turned out there was a Zakk bullseye BENEATH the paint of a factory black Custom.

I'll bet what you'll find under that paint is a thin veneer, that you'll sand right through if not careful.

I've stripped a white Epi Custom, but I didn't strip the front.

I wouldn't know how to recognize wood types, and never looked at the cap when I had the pickups out.

EDIT: I just went back and found a pic. There was paint inside the cavities, so I would not have seen the edge grain of the cap.

To my knowledge most recent Epis don't have a maple cap - except it is advertised as 'hard maple cap' or 'curved maple cap'
if they call it 'maple top' it is just the veneer on top of the body....

Wondering about mine. It's a left handed ebony colored Std. Ser. # says made 10/2008 @ factory # 12 or 20, I forget, would have to look, but one or the other of the two China "mystery plants."
I know it has a maple veneer. You can tell. Underneath is it a carved mahogany body or a flat one with a carved cap of alder and/or mystery wood?
    Nice guitar too.

Thanks powerslide. I'll check that out. Just saw a typo I made in my post, ha. Mine was made 09/2010, not 10/2008, though I doubt that makes any difference. Made in factory #12.

Was curious about this myself after reading this thread, I bought my Epi LP standard from a local shop before all the internet marketing verbiage got me confused.

It's in pieces at the moment while I try and save some coin to resurrect it :)
