I went to my favorite guitar shop today and immediately saw a 1979 Les Paul Standard. Nicely reliced tobacco sunburst body, three piece maple neck, working electronics, etc. Only problem: the frets were on their last foot, I don't think they have enough meat for a re-crowning. The man who is selling it under consignment won't budge under $1500 CAD (about $1144 USD). It'll coast about $450 for a re-fret.

I just can't get this killer standard out of my mind. But at 1500, I'd feel guilty. I would have bought it for $1200 but...

I looked on Reverb, and '79s are routinely going for over $2K USD. I'm not sure how well Reverb reflects actual value, but this might still be a deal, no?

This guitar has been through the ringer, but it's fully operational.

    Just buy it!
    It's worth that and more.
If you don't have the money for the re-fret,
    put it under your bed.
    She'll wait.

Try doing what I do. I never ask anyone if they'll "take" what ever I want to pay.

Go into that guitar shop and lay 12 crisp CAD $100 bills on the counter. If they say no, then quietly gather up your money, put it in your pocket, turn around and walk out. I'd say your odds of walking out with that guitar are better than 50/50. That'll leave you with an additional $300 toward the re-fret.

You can get your money back out of it after a refret even at the price they asked. I say go for it!

And find someone who does refrets at a more reasonable price!
    $450?!?
    That's about 350-375 US?

Go get it, otherwise we'll patiently await your future post lamenting the time you passed on a killer 79 Les Paul Standard at the ridiculously low price of $1500 CAD.

If you buy it, have stainless steel frets installed. You won't regret it
