I called a local about a les paul for sale on CL. he didn't seem to know much about it...

there were a couple things that just don't smell right... the 'Gibson' name didn't look right... but that could just be me not knowing...

it had the custom diamond, and custom truss rod cover, but the hardware was silver and the fretboard was rosewood...

how can I, as a novice tell if it's real?

I don't want to insult the guy, it's a gorgeous guitar, but I don't want to pay for a real gibson and get a fake(if I pay for a fake and get it, that's fine :) )

here's the pic of the headstock:

the headstock doesn't look right. the TRC is too close to the nut, and no customs come with rosewood fretboards. Also, almost all fakes have wonky tone knobs that aren't parallel. I say almost because the occasional fakes have had more effort put into them to make them better aligned but they still have other obvious problems. Also, alot of the fakes don't have fret-edge bindings on the frets.

It's fake. Save yourself the trouble kids...just figure that ALL the Gibson LP's on CL are fakes. You will be much better off.

Yeah, it does look a little "off". Got any more pictures to post? Check to see if it has FEB. Doesn't the Custom Classic have a maple neck?

Agreed....Was wondering if Gibson darked the maple neck a tad for the black customs.

Gibson does make legit Customs that have chrome hardware. I will let those who know more offer opinions on this particular guitar but just wanted to let you know that chrome hardware is not a sign of a fake.

? what is FEB? and what do you mean wings?

    I told you... I'm a N00b :)

the only gibson's I've been around is my grandfathers '47 acoustic, and a friend's from highschool ('75 custom)

I'm looking for my first LP, but I'll be going with an epi or similar due to budget... and this one is still slightly out of budget, and no way of knowing who really made it

thanks for all the input! I really appreciate the help...

I've bought and sold a lot on CL, never had issues... but also never had to worry about something being a fake either... generally small items or cars is what I've bought and sold...

Also, see that sticker on the control cavity? To me that is the biggest giveaway as I have never once seen a real Gibson with one of those.
