I know that there is the checkbox, but I was wondering if there was a way that actually worked?

@Howard2k Our logs show that the last email newsletter that we sent to you was on June 13th to the email address you have associated with your account. Since then, multiple newsletters have been sent, but not to the email addy associated with Howard2k. At least thats what our logs say. Are you seeing something different? If so, can you PM me and confirm what email address.

I believe that the setting you are looking for is somewhere else.
If you click on your user name on the upper right of the page (next to inbox and alerts) it will open a menu.
Select Contact Details
Look for RECEIVE SITE MAILINGS setting under MESSAGING SETTINGS
This is the culprit. Just unselect it.
