So I've been working on this solo today. I've got the chord forms down and can play it to speed - if i let the notes ring out - which is wrong.

Any suggestions on how to perform this correctly?

The tab I am working with shows the last note of each phrase as a whole step pre bend but i've just been playing it a whole step up. Why do the the prebend?

    ie:

    12-------12-------12-----18~~~
    ---14-------14-------14----------
    ------15-------15----------------

    instead of

    12-----16^1step~~~
    ----14-----------------

Prebend is where the soul is. Work on that.

Bending strings every which way is an essential technique in lead guitar playing.

I don't know where you're at with lead guitar but since you asked, "why do the prebend" I assume you haven't been at it that long. Forgive me if I've misjudged your station.

I found this dude on youtube (who's sporting a sweet looking LP) who gets some decent examples of bends across pretty quickly. There's tons of other long-winded lessons out there as well.

It's just one of those things you work on until it's second nature (along with vibrato). Then your singing!

Not IMO. I think it sounds quite nice to let the arps ring. YMMV though ;) (It is cleaner if they don't.)
I doubt that's how the original was actually played - and I've found some evidence...

Watch this, and you can see both of them sliding up to the pitch - not bending at all (let alone pre-bending) - 5:40:

Of course, you can hear the slide too (it was quicker on the original, barely audible), so if you like that effect, slide - that's what I'd do. If you're not bothered and just want to hit the note straight, do that - it sounds just as good, and I might do that too.

Of course, there's a whole load of other nicely controlled bends and pre-bends elsewhere in the solo! Plenty to learn from. This is (needless to say) great guitar-playing, which makes it all the more significant that they don't pre-bend those notes.;)

I've seen that part tabbed out that way before, but I think you're making it harder than it has to be with your picking hand and that's why you're struggling with making it sound clean. This is the way I've been playing that part and I'm pretty sure it's how Don plays it:

    14--10------14--10------14--10------14--10------14--10------
    --------12----------12----------12----------12----------12--

    12--9------12--9------12--9--*9/18~~~~~
    -------11---------11-------------------

Try it and see if it's not easier to play that lick cleaner.

Love the embellishments Don and Joe do at around 6:05 in that vid!
