While I have not seen many people saying Gibson should make less guitars, I agree with some aspects of this.

I'm also a relatively new customer of Gibson CS and I do not like the "WTF a Gold Top für 6k!?!??? Glad I have what I got" thing. (On the other hand, who cares?) Times change and If 6k is what it takes to get a nice Gibson CS guitar in 2017 then so be it. I'm OK with that. (Man, that sounds terrible!) Sure, it'd be nice if the same guitar cost 60 percent of that, but why even think about that possibility? It *would* be nice if the iPhone X was 599, it *may* even be more reasonable, but it just is 999.:bowdown

Personally I'd be very sad if the only option for a Gibson instrument is what the US line currently offers. A Standard might be great indeed, but I'm just a sucker for the aesthetics* of a Custom Shop Burst or BB or … Like Andy California, I will probably always prefer to buy new from a dealer. We'll see.

Lots of interesting psychological issues involved on either side, I think.

Crotch said it well: All of this doesn't have to be too serious.

Things went south when the CC line looked like "guitar of the week"...:hmm:
Just remember how things were SO COOL at the beginning of this series!

The problem was the overproduction of all Historics, including too many CC's.

If they would have kept the number lower, there'd be less in the used market. Now Gibson is raising the prices again and trying to differentiate the old historics from the new "standards" in hopes of starting a new.

An interesting take would be if they are indeed trying to make the Standard the new R's. Leaving the Trad as the top of the line USA run. I actually think that isn't a bad idea. Edwin and Rick didn't have to be let go for that to happen. Thats another story.

And which Standard are you talking about - Custom Shop Standard (which I think other than 2017, is now M2M only), or the USA Standard?

I have always thought the price of these custom shop guitars are what they are, and careful shopping will get you a better price.
The thing that makes me chuckle out loud is when someone thinks they're buying something that will have investment value.
There are just too many of them made for the investment aspect to materialize. Then some people who made this major purchase don't want to hear that.
I really love my guitars and don't care what the future value of them are. Seriously, they're just guitars:D

By renaming the R's standards taking away the USA standard and having the trad the high end of USA line and the standard the new R.

I heard that a donkey saw two purple trucks digging for trees on a rock, but when the chickens started playing their Les Pauls, the two purple trucks had a cow. The farmer Henry J made those chickens pay double for those Les Pauls, that's when the cow jumped over the moon.

    Ok..................I made some shit up.:D

At the risk of sounding old, it was a lot easier in the 70's and 80's when your choices for Les Pauls were:

    Custom
    Standard
    Deluxe
    Special
    Junior

Sure, there were a couple of odd balls like The Paul and Anniversary models, but a lot of great music was recorded and performed with just these 5 models. But I guess it's too late to go backwards and reduce the line to just 5 models and make them all simply outstanding.

I understand what you mean, but lack of choice is not the best option

Yeah I've always wondered what in God's name people are thinking when they buy a guitar and think it's going to appreciate in price? Maybe they think they are modern day P.T. Barnum's or something.

But there was a time not too long ago if you bought used you could easily and quickly get your money back, sometimes even make money. Now those days are gone. At least the easily and quickly part.

Yes, in the used market this can still happen, but the market has really swung toward the BUYER, turn around with a profit will just take longer.
