Hi, I'm trying to rewire my Mocingbird st to a vintage or slash signature bird. I have a wireing diagram for the electronics. I love the guitar but I get no sustain and rockfield pickups suck the big one! It's got the coil taps, reverse phase and 5 way varitone. I plane on putting all knew hardware in her like better pots and swiches plus I want to put a preamp like the wolf rose bullet that BC Rich use to use but I can't find one anywhere so I was hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction for a new preamp? I have had no luck finding a replacement for the bullet.

    Thanks,
    Van

    Nealmoser.com

Neal sells the original circuit, he invented them. Dump the Mafia's!!!! Dimarzio Super Distortion for the bridge and PAF for the neck.

Slash always disconnected all the switches and whatnot, in case you're interested.

Yeah I found Neals site after I posted this. Do you know if it's at all like the bullet preamp?

    Thanks,
    Van

Alright I've ordered everything except pickups. The majority of my order will be in the mail tomorrow. I got the preamp and varitone circuits orders from Neal Moser who I got to talk to myself. He even offered to teach me how to wire the mockingbird in a class he teaches. But I live in Michigan and I would have to make a trip down to Arizona. I will be posting pic and info of my mock as the project goes on.

Oh one more thing for acstorfer, is that why slash had a signiture mbird without all the switches? The one you normally see him playing with all the switches is a custom shop that he ordered. So I don't see why he'd disconnect them if he ordered it that way. Also BC Rich released 2 slash mockingbird signatures one with the switches and one without. There custom shop rereleased the one with all the switches and you can get it in red, natural and blue I believe.

    Thanks,
    Van

Make that trip to Arizona.... If nea'ls willing to teach... you should listen!!!! :thumb:

I need to get out this winter and play some golf with the man...

I'm a Moser fan.... Neal taught me a LOT about building.. I must have talked to him for 40 hours when i got started building...

I use his booster circuits and i get my truss rod covers engraved by him and buy variuos other parts from him as need arises

I even bought one of his guitars and spot my MCS "yearsofdecay" hockey jersey from time to time!

right now... he's got THIS monster for sale.. and i WANT IT!!!!!!

I already wired it up with mosers preamp and varitone. Sounds amazing but I get a lot of noise! I had Neal look at it he said everything was right. But he wouldn't give me a definate answer on wether or not it should be so noisy. If I take the battery out I still get noise. So I don't know what it is. Any suggestions?

    Thanx,
    Van

Van, could you explain to me what are those wiring mods that you have made on the Mockingbird? I'm trying to find out what are the electronic specs of Slash's Mockingbird but I haven't found anything about it. Thanks.

I have come along way from when I posted this :) I'm on the BCR board now and have learned a lot. Many people speculate that slash has disconnected the electronics or just took the battery out. But the signature that was put out some time ago had the regular mock circuit. You can get the diagram from Neals site or just buy his pre made one. Cost is about the same if you buy everything from allparts rather than from Neal. From what I understand Neal created the circuits that bc rich uses. I hope this helps!

    Here is Neal's site

Thanks for helping, Van! Actually I had already asked Neal what would be that mod and he said he had no idea since he wasn't working with B.C at the time. So I wasn't sure if it would be in fact the 74-85 circuit. Do you think that this circuit really makes an upgrade to the Mockingbird and makes it sound closer to Slash's one? Thanks again.

There are no mods on the slash mock. Just a standard mockingbird circuit. There are 2 signature slash mocks. One with full electronics package and the other with only the 2 volume, 1 tone and toggle. And as I mentioned its speculated that he disconnected the electronics minus the volume and tone knobs. You can definitely get a variety of tones! The circuit isn't going to give you "THE SLASH TONE" that comes from one place and one place only, Slash! lol. But you can get close with buying all the same things he uses. Pickups are your main priority. Buy some Seymour Duncan APH-II. If you get the mock circuit from Neal than you'll need pu with 4 wires. May I ask what mock you have? I hope this helps.

Sure it helps a lot! And yes, I'm aware that this circuit won't give me The Slash tone hahah, but what I'm trying to find out is if something on the circuit would sound any closer than that sound on, for example, You Could be Mine or his live solos with the Mockingbird the same way it's known that the Alnico II makes a huge improvement if your trying to get that sound. By the way, they are on the list too =D. And sure you can ask, as far as I know it's a 97' custom ordered Mockingbird but I don't know anything else yet. Here's a link of some picture of it. Thanks again!

Ha! Sorry I never got back to this thread Van. If I recall, Slash's sig guitars were never actually authorized by Slash. It's called the SL and only references it as a top hat wearing player, never by Slash's name. May have changed.

I spent a lot of time at the BCR players forum. There are some really great guys there who are very helpful with all things BCR and they are exceptionally knowledgeable.

Ed, the preamp and other controls won't give you the slash tone. He never really used them. Also the pic didn't work, I would still like to see it. I love mocks!

Acstorfer, I think your mixing 2 birds together. There are the SL models made in the us and the ST models made in Korea. The mik mocks have the description you're talking about, something about a certain top hat wearing guitarist. And you are right that slash never endorsed BC Rich so they could never release it as a slash sig. But people have come to know the 2 models made somtime in the '90s as slash sigs. Both red, maple top, mahogany body/neck, ebony fret, floyd and one with and without mock full electronics package. You'll see them on the bay from time to time.

They still make the SL in a variety of colors, quilted or flame maple and black hardware.

Yeah, it's been a while since I really discussed BCR's. They have some great guitars and I miss mine so much! My holy grail guitar is an early birdseye maple, shorthorn Mockingbird with bells and whistles. The ST model, if I recall has some of the knobs and switches, but doesn't have the 20db pre-amp like the one you got from Neal. I corresponded with him several times regarding my 81 Bich and 85 ST-III. He was extremely cool. Actually surprisingly cool and helpful!

Okay, I can't resist from showing off some of the BCR's I had that I f'ing miss!

I've actually had several others, but they are the ones I miss most.

By the way, wouldn't mind seeing a pic or two (or three) of your souped up Mockingbird.

Hmm, it's good to know that. I'm still not sure if it was worth. About the pictures, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but if you click to open on a new tab it will open the album. Anyway, I'll try again. Thanks for the help, Van.

Nice Ed! If you ever sell that mock please hit me up. That actually looks exactly like one of the old '90s signatures I was talking about.

Thanks, Van! Yes, It looks pretty close to that ones. It's also signed by Bernie Rico. I hope I never need to sell it but otherwise I'll let you know.
