Has everything been done already?

It seems so many bands are compared to other bands and everything has been done already. It seems really hard as band to write music that sounds original. Is it close to impossible to come up with a new sound that hasn't been done already?

I don't think being original is that hard.

Original and good, now that's another story.

Of course it's possible. It happens all the time. My riffs are original, for example. I aspire to make every song I write original. There will almost always be similarities, but that's because there are millions of musicians and only 12 notes.

I guess what I meant was we always hear about this genre or that genre and it seems hard to come up with a completely new style.

    Great subject!

IMHO, in the sense of the types of melodies and harmonies that have already been created (in pop/rock) etc, I agree - largely most things have been done, but to me that doesn't matter, as there is also the keeping the spirit alive, from one generation to another that is important with these kind of styles.

In similar styles such as folk, blues, flamenco etc, which are also like pop music, quite simple, everything that could be done harmonically, was achieved relatively early on, so each generation, rather than reinvent the wheel, instead has celebrated (and celebrates) that wheel - and kept the spirit of the style alive! :) Pop/rock has a lot of originality left in a pop culture sense (e.g using new/current 'buzz words', lyrics that are topical to the time, sound effects that are new etc), many will view that as being original and fresh; but in the sense of 'nuts and bolts' construction, they hasn't been anything new for a long time IMO.

To the op; If you're bored of the same old things things - and your ears crave some harmonic excitement; I recommend classical music. You have 500 years to get into - and some real variety! :slash:

I'm in the processes of having a relatively new style. Won't be Jeff Beck new, but I'll get back to ya on that. :D

Really I think new genres won't just jump out immediately. I know lots of sub-genres do, but that's mostly for electronic music and metal/rock.

For an entire new genre, we'll have to have a great mind do something different. Then others will start to create through his/her work out of admiration and inspiration. Voila! A new genre.

Don't try to be original, it is pretentious. Wear your influences with pride but don't ape them. Musical innovation rarely (if ever) resulted from a standing start.

No. Not even close. Even if you're one of those folks who thinks of music as the physical notes, sound waves, harmonies, et cetera.

If you were referencing my post, it was badly worded. It's not that I try to be original, but rather I don't look for my music elsewhere. It comes from me.

If you weren't referencing my post, then please excuse me.

I Don't think there's anyway to to know if it's all been done. If there was something that hadn't been done, and we knew about it, then it would be done. Know what I mean? Kind of like time travel.

Not specifically referring to you but rather the pitfalls of enforced originality.

I've spent too long with people who have thrown away good stuff because it is a bit like this or that. Anyone who has ears will have picked up on things over time, these will percolate through and be revealed.

I make my meager living off of it. So did our man Billy Shakespeare. Even if his living was a bit less meager than mine. :laugh2:

    No.

The bigger question is, "will you recognize something new when you hear it? Or will you dislike it because it doesn't sound so much like what you're used to?" :hmm:

Will you dismiss it without really listening?

There are people in the world right now doing their own thing, that really don't sound much like anyone except themselves.

You just have to be astute enough to notice it when you find it.

Someone like Derek Trucks taking elements of Indian classical music is a good example. That stuff is hard work for most Western ears but when used as a sort of condiment creates a new voice.

    quick answer:no
it seems though musicians these days are in it for the money instead for the love of music.
that might be the reason everything sound the same these days.
during the disco era as i heard it was the same and then the 90's came.
    so there is hope.

    that's uh,...kind of a bullsh*t statement dude.

What's on the radio and mtv? ok, yeah, maybe.

But most of those people aren't musicians.

What about the guys slaving away in the clubs for scratch every week?

    Just saying.

Guys like me could take a comment like that personally,...get angry and sh*t.

I've starved for near 20 years trying to bring people original music. Were I in it for the money I would've sold out a looooong time ago and played the popular music instead of trying to make something new.

But I don't want to copy people. I want to be the guy that other people end up copying.

Yep. Everything. Somewhere, sometime, it's all been done before. Sorry.
