Inspired by the Duane Allman thread, I was thinking on my list of favorite guitarists. Those being:
    Jimi Hendrix
    Jerry Garcia
    Duane Allman
    Jimmy Page
    Ritchie Blackmore
    Johnny Winter
    Jeff Beck
    Michael Schenker

There are tons more that float in and out of that list, but those guys are consistently on it. However, there are certain guitarists whose appeal I just don't quite get. Not that they aren't any good...only that I don't, and can't seem to connect with them.
The #1 on this list for me is Eric Clapton. He's just never really done anything I liked. Layla is fine enough, I suppose (and yes, Duane A. is on that too), but I just find the man's music boring. I've seen him rip it up before, for sure. I own the Cream albums, etc., and remember one very fantastic performance of Little Red Rooster he did on the Stones tour a few years back (live video). But dammit if the man just plain doesn't bore me for the most part....
In the end I guess it's either your thing or it ain't - but Clapton has never been my thing.

    Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page ( Go ahead, the flame suits on:))

I'm sure there are others but those two seem to get a lot of attention.

    I dont get it:slap:

Oh, and how could I forget, Neil Young..... One word, ugh!

Not a big fan of clapton either.

But, I really don't get Jeff Beck. Most of the songs I've heard of his are nothing special, and some of his bends remind me of cats in heat.

I know this is a personal taste thing and nobody get heated but I like Jeff and I like Pagey, I like all those old rockers who have paid their dues. They have inspired not just one generation but two or maybe three and it's testament to to that longevity and creativity that we're here debating them in 2009.:thumb:

Clapton never moved me much, Page even less. Modern Jeff Beck when he's using too much vibrato and trem is just like described above, like cat's in heat:laugh2:
Otherwise though, there's not an electric guitarist on the planet who can touch Jeff beck in my book.

Pat Metheny . I just don't get his appeal. For me his albums are emotionless vacuous husks. He's supposed to be great live though.......

Oh, I love Page. But I just don't get Beck.
The old rockers are all I listen to, which is a testament to what they created. No new bands really do anything for me, I dont know how my friends enjoy some of the new stuff thats out there. Im 18, btw, so I have to deal with a lot of shitty music at parties and such.

I used to not get Beck either, but that changed a couple years ago. Now he clicks with me. I think it's the shear understated skill with which he does things. Even with my admiration for him I'm willing to admit he's got the weakest material overall. BUT, his playing is ungodly, and once that sucks you in your hooked, and then his instrumentation and melodies do make sense, in a good way. I can totally see how people don't get him though.

I suppose I "get" Page...but still, not the most incredible player, by any means..just did a few things that were ahead of his time. Which is cool I suppose, still over-rated.

a guitarist I REALLY don't get? ZAKK WYLDE...Do not understand the merit of this guitar player...is it the beard? I dunno.

Check out Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow . He almost single handedly created that type of Jazz/rock Fusion in the seventies. some real interesting and intricate stuff there. Plus he plays a LP on at least one cut and the album cover.:thumb:

I will agree that Page and Clapton, Beck etc really have paid their dues for sure and inspired a lot of us over the years.
I'm just not a Page nut or Clapton head. On electrics its Jeff Beck or Carlos Santana ( Yamaha mid-seventies era ) for me.
Sorry you have so many people you age putting out such mediocre music. Maybe things will change and musicionship will make a comeback. Life in the music world has been pretty scary since Rap/Hip-Hop took center stage twenty plus years back. Things just ain't been right since then:rolleyes::D

Good luck being Eighteen! It's the time of life you feel invulnerable and don't need Viagra:laugh2: Enjoy it all. You already have a good head for music, so yu're ahead in that dept.:thumb:

Definitely Blow by Blow, and Wired, and the new live one is awesome too. That one kind of renewed my love for his stuff. There are, of course, the first two as well for the classic rock inclined.

That's funny. I was never a Plant fan either, but Axil's voice made me turn to back Plant with admiration:laugh2: I always turn off GNR because of Axil's voice.

All good ones for sure. It took me a while to warm up to his Techno stuff from his later albums, but once in the zone, I learned to appreciate them.
I do get bored of his Rad Stewart stuff though.

Yea, I know. Hopefully my band can change that. Whenever we play shows people love our stuff (hugely classic rock based), so maybe there is still hope.

I'll check out JB a little more. I think it may be more of the type or music he plays, never was a fan of fusion type stuff (rock or otherwise), but I definetely appreciate him for the great guitarist he is...its just the music he chose. /bleh

I don't get Tom Morello. There really is no feel or anything to his playing. It's all just about making dumb noises using stuff like allen wrench's, rubbing his hands on the strings and whatnot.

Tom Morello is shit. We use to make fun of him at school all the time. A mate really liked Rage, we use to rip the shit out of them.

    He uses too many pedals.

Tom Morello is the best big name guitarist who plays with his feet. That is the nicest I can say since most of his sound comes from pedals.
