March 7th, 2007. The 365th guitar built at the Nashville plant that day.

    006670675

First and fifth digits are the year - 07
Second, third and fourth digits are the day of the year - 066 equals the 66th day (or march 7th)
The last 4 digits are the production number - 0675
As far as the production numbers, 0001 to 0300 are reserved for the acoustic plant in Montana. Nashville uses from 0301 and up. That means 0675 is the 375th guitar built in Nashville that day (probably one of the last of that day).

The Classics are a bit more complex to decipher. Contact Gibson USA via Email and they'll respond with the information for you.

The last four numbers on my 08 Std are 1354 (nine number s/n). does that mean it was the 1054th guitar of the day in Nashville? That suprises me.:hmm:

Hi guys please help me with this one. I have a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty purchased used in 1976. The serial # is 00120780 and is imprinted on the back of the headstock, along with LES PAUL CUSTOM and Made in USA. I know it could not have been made in 2000 as it was purchased before then. Any ideas?

    muz59, that 1 means it's the 700th. So, 700 + 54 = ?

People, go to Gibson.com and search for "serial number." It explains everything.
There's even a link to it in the Gibson Les Paul 101 thread. Gibson serial numbers are not rocket science.

Already been to the Gibson site. No info on this one. Could be a freak (it was actually played by an icon) thats why I came here thinking someone knew something I didn't, as I've been into solid Gibsons for a long time.

    serial# 00120780

Can I get some input as to how the year is determined on this sequence of #'s?

'75-'77 had their own bastarized serial number setup. They had a 2 digit prefix followed by a 6 digit number. 8 digits total.

    99 prefix = '75
    00 prefix = '76
    06 prefix = '77

00120780 could also indicate a 2000 model, but since you said you bought it in '76, 2000 is impossible.

Also, it saying Les Paul Custom on the back of neck tells it's from the 70's. Bet it has a 3 piece neck too.
