A while back I read about the rumor that a few, or just one, early 50's Goldtop did have "Mary Ford model" written on its headstock, instead of the Les Paul script. Can someone confirm or bust this myth? Ive been looking for info on this topic but i can't find anything. Can someone chime in with some wisdom? I would really like to know more about it!

One of 50 Limited guitar from Gibson custom shop. Perfect replica of 1958 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top owned by Mary Ford.

Never seen 'Mary Ford' on a HS but there is this, obviously being 'owned by' isn't the same as an official model, in the 50's, probably a personal mod.

Interesting that! I'd love to know the answer too! There's a '58 Gold Top in BOTB with floral pick guards (yes, two!), serial 8 3324, that was supposed to have been owned by Mary Ford, but it says "Les Paul" on the head stock. Gibson put out a reissue of it some years back.

    She also played an ES-295:

So maybe some confusion about which was a possible 'official' Mary Ford model?

In no way impossible. Probably some confusion since none seems to know anything about it!

Not impossible, but would have thought with such a prolific musician of the time it would be all over the www and not to hard to find if such a thing existed, the LP/SG in the pic above was owned by her [And sold for over $100,000] and it seems the only 'personal' connection to Gibson. [For the LP]

Whilst the LP above with the flower PG was linked to her I've never seen a pic of one in her hands, plenty of GT's but no flowers.

A unique association P. But I always found the flowered pickguard a bit... dainty?

Brian Robertson has an LP that was (allegedly) one of Mary Ford's.

As a kid I'd watch Mary, and Les on TV, and she would usually play GT's and later the LP/SG Customs. I would think "yeah, someday I'm gonna have one of those".

There was definitely some experimentation going on early in the run...

I used to know of a DFW pawnshop that had a '52 gold top hanging up behind the counter (not for sale) that you could see a fairly large "Les Paul" in the same font as the headstock silkscreen starting to peek through the gold finish in the top of the guitar. It was diagonal across the forearm area. The goldtop looked otherwise 100% legit and I suspect it was some early trial-and-error mockup that wound up sprayed over and shipped out in the early days of the first model run. It wouldn't surprise me if they made a "Mary Ford Model" just as an-house spitballing and then scrapped the notion.

I remember seeing a Les and Mary album cover where Les had a Goldtop, and Mary had an SG Custom sporting a Mary Ford truss rod cover.
