I did try to search this but didn't find anything. Maybe I searched the wrong thing, got a lot of results but nothing for this specifically. If this has already been discussed I am sorry.

I have noticed that in quite a few homemade builds of burst replicas and other Gibson replicas people have blacked out the logo. I assume this is has something to with copyright. But I have a couple of questions:

    1) Can Gibson actually do anything if you put a Gibson logo on your own, homemade, guitar as long as you aren't selling it.

    2) What are people's view on using the Gibson logo if it isn't Gibson made guitar?

If it was not built by Gibson then it should never have the Gibson logo on it, who you trying to fool your self or others?

I do not believe it is illegal to produce a guitar and put a Gibson logo on it, as long as you plan to keep the guitar. Soon as you look at selling it, I believe this is where legality issues could come into play.

There are mixed views on putting a companies logo onto a guitar you are building. Some are totally against it, others don't have a problem with it, others seem to just like wood and not care either way.

I didn't know there was a rule against it? Interesting...

I get the selling it, but I can also understand people wanting to make the 'perfect' replica and putting a logo on it. It depends on if you go around telling people it is a real Gibson or if you go around going it is a guitar you built.

I was also unaware of the rule actually. I just did a full replica build which has the real company logo on it, because it was a pure replica build and not just a telecaster or les paul build or anything like that. I put an indication on the back of the headstock that it was made by me, and I would never try and pass it off as real, I am proud of the work and time I put into it!

I'm looking at another build down the road, which will be more of a just building a guitar of my desires, and in that case I wont put another companies logo on it.

I can tell MLP is getting back to normal; there's a Gibson-logo-on-homebuilt thread and a topwrap thread, both on the front page of new posts.

The part where people are fussing about Gibson logos on non-Gibson builds, and why some folks topwrap while others don't.

You know, normal ... for MLP.

Seems like that is pretending to have something that is not.

anyone who has the skill to build a Gibby replica should be proud to put there own name on it, anyone who knows about guitars will already know what its meant to be

Is this the case though? I thought in your own possession you can put any logo you wanted on it, but it becomes an issue if you are trying to sell something with the Gibson logo on it, that was not made by Gibson (thus making a profit off their name).

Makes me wonder how Max and Derrig replicas manage to get circulated. Anybody happen to know?

Those were quite a while ago - and they are now secondhand and sold as replicas. In fact they get much more money being a replica than they would do being a Gibson.

It's a shocking idea to try to do such a thing. :naughty:
