I know the difference between nibs and no-nibs very well,
and sure my hands can feel sharp fretends
and even my old eyes can tell if it's done wrong.....

The first picture is a crappy job, the others are pretty much how nibs should be on a USA Gibson. For Reissues it's different as it's fret sitting over half binding. Again, like it or not, those are nibs and they looks as hand scraped nibs.

Your last picture it's not using nibs, so it's totally pointless to compare apple with oranges.

And honestly I don't really like that last frets. They look silly. :)

Then we need to play the same game. Are we talking about feeling or looking?

    Let's talk about looking right?

What is a Gibson Les Paul? An attempt to keep the original heritage of the bursts alive. USA line much less, Custom Shop reissues lot more. But both the lines are based and inspired by the Bursts.
    How was that original Burst?

    Was using a full bound fretboard with nibs, all hand scraped;

How they were looking? Not really like your guitar with sausage finished frets.

Now, how do those nibs feels?

This is personal. My Custom Shop are feeling absolutely spectacular, and I also have guitars with naked and super smooth frets, like your picture (my godin for example). They are both feeling great, otherwise I wouldn't keep them.

So what we are talking here? What you guys are comparing? A neck with nibs from a Gibson with a neck without nibs from a MIJ copy? What's the point? :)

We were comparing MiJ guitars to Gibson guitars, that includes the Quality of both

How can you compare the quality of a handscraped bound neck, with a neck with fret over binding? Again, what's the point?

If you say that your MIJ is better than Gibson with nibs, we need a MIJ with nibs, otherwise it's a nonsense of a comparison.

If you say nibs can be edgy sometimes, that is true but it's not giving your MIJ without nibs any extra point, since they are avoiding the task all together.

all vintage tokai LS80 and higher, and higher end grecos have nibs, all hand scraped, and no sharp edges, for the newer guitars all navigators, and high end tokais have nibs...that was what i was comparing to initially..

amazing how a thread can be derailed... :) what was it ?
Gibson from the point of view of MIJ fans..

ah yes.. I am an unabashed MIJ fan, I don't like modern Gibsons as much as vintage and modern MIJ for many reasons, none which will matter if you do like Gibsons, each to their own..

So we have a bunch of people who have owned multiple versions of both in a heated argument with someone who has only had one and is vehemently defending the only one he has had.

I rest my case. My grammar and punctuation are correct so you can trust me. Don't believe the guy with the shop that has probably the world's most impressive collection of MIJ single cuts. He's a phony.

    Peope are people.

My Gibby and Non-Gibby guitars all get along just fine. :D

If it plays good, sounds good and feels good, it is good.

I'll admit, the whole CITES thing has scared me off from buying from Japan. So, if I do buy another LP style guitar, I'd look for another Gibby or look for a Heritage, or look stateside for an MIJ.

yeah...15 years ago that guy started out dealing in historics too, before he got into MIJ he was a big Gibson fanboy. :) now he just a bloody corksniffer.. its all nibs this and air dried that long tenon old growth nitro vs poly weight relieving nonsense.

What have you experienced in the "lack of QC" department, specifically from the Custom Shop?

Beamer and a Hyundai? LOL. Yeah, what difference could there be?
As for guitars, I will never understand the association with QC and it not being set up good from the factory. Spend $50 on a set up, and before you say "spend 5k you shouldn't have to", I'll call bullshit immediately. I like my action slightly higher. Our other guitar player in the band likes his REALLY low. Who cares about the setup from the factory? That's like saying a new car has QC problems because the seat and steering wheel is not adjusted for you when you get in it to drive it off of the lot.

    Let's see freebyrd.....
I think everyone has noticed little bullsh*tty things on the standard run of the mill Gibsons. From fret sprout, to crappy veneer rosewood fret boards, to rough sanded fret boards, to some finish bubbles, or otherwise nasty finish issues. I myself have a guitar of their's, the ES139, that Gibson admitted they discontinued due to QC issues. For the company to say it themselves, then obviously, there are some QC issues.
As for the custom shop stuff, no I haven't seen any with issues, but why should I spend 5K just to have a Gibson without, hopefully, issues?
