Gibson 496 R 498 T question.

    Look at GFS pickups for cheap-end.
    Duncan Custom + 59n for mid/low priced

    Alternatives to change the sound away from those pickups while costing less or alternatives that sound similar to them but cost less?

    Yes. Looked into Gibsons and with postage to Au too dear. Would buy 'used' also. Thanks all.

    It looks like you're going for a hotter set. This appears to be a killer deal http://www.byoguitar.com/Guitars/Eruption---Humbucker-Set__BYO-ERUPTION-SET.aspx Nickel silver base plate, possibly a wood spacer, if it follows the Blizzard of 59 set. That's the dirt cheapest I've ever seen a humbucker, let alone a set, with premium appointments. It looks like they're closely related to Tonerider, possible using the same parts or made at the same factory.

    496R and 498T is an unusual combination. The 498T is usually paired with 490R, while the 496R "belongs" to the 500T.
    I think buying used is your best bet in both cases, since a lot of people swap out their stock Gibson pups.
