General consensus on routing out vintage Norlin for full size PAF's?

    Too late...

    The guy that did mine must have been a do it yourselfer. He didn't even secure the coils with a rubber band during the process.

    As @cooljuk pointed out to me the outer tape wrappings were cooked off during the potting process. This left the windings and leads exposed to the wind.
    Every article I have read and winder I have talked to confirms that there is no way to get all the wax out of the windings.
    The windings must be cut out, parts cleaned, and re-wound. Freakin' shame! And yes, they sound flat to me....

    Even in my ignorant youth ,I somehow knew p-90s were the way to go ....and that I was lucky to have a guitar that would fit 'em

    My 1st Les Paul was a '71 Deluxe that had been "Sholz'd" (a humbucker rout in the bridge) . Alan Hamel ,before he went to the Fender Custom Shop, suggested a p-90 boo boo ring around the bridge rout and made one for it.
    I wish I had close ups . Gonna have to dig up pics of that guitar

    But to routing out Deluxes for humbs ,I say NO !
    Just get the p-90s in there .....

    And if you must have humbuckers, plenty of companies make ones in that form factor

    you should try to remove some of it and see if they brighten back up a little....patience is the key.

    James has actually done a lot of work with testing of 'attempted de-potting' and then cutting the pickup open to see how successful he was.....not very in short. I think the outer few layers might have been as far as any wax removal got.

    The OP asked what the consensus is, and the answer is that there is no consensus. Full size HBs are preferred (by far) to mini-hums by most. (Personally, I like both.) For everyone who says not to alter a somewhat collectible original, there's someone who thinks having the fullsized HBs is an upgrade if done to a high standard. For everyone who loves P90s in a LP there is someone (like me) who absolutely does not. I think it ends up being a wash, really. If you want to please others, don't rout it because, as others have said, you can't undo it, and the unmodified guitar retains all its potential. (As some advise: sell it and buy one w/ HBs.) If you want to please yourself, well, do what you want. When discussed, this issue is always a 50/50 deathmatch. My only judgment, personally, is that someone doing a bad rout job needs to fry in h, e, double hockeysticks.

    I've done full size humbuckers with modified baseplates in P-90 routes so I suppose the same should fit in most mini routes.

    I have a feeling that most people who want to route out for humbuckers want more than just the sound though, and are trying to make the guitar also look more like a burst-era LP. :dunno:

    The minis or P-90's should sound great through the right amp. There's nothing wrong with either.

    Or contact cooljuk! :thumb:

    The mini in the neck should sound amazing as is. I really can't imagine wanting to change that. It would be a downgrade.

    Maybe get a killer set of Firebird minis wound?

    If those are 50 era P90's you can always wire the middle position out of phase and reverse polarity and have a true humbucker in the center position....

    I put P 90 sized super distortions in my goldtop, they sound just like the originals.

    You said it:"too valuable and old to mod ....." IF she was a badly broken, badly repaired "husk", then a re-rout and rebuild might be in order.....I like the P90 option!
