I noticed while reading some threads that quite a bit of theory on scales is being covered, one area not mentioned is the actual fingering people use. A lot of box pattern scales dictate which fingers you use anyway when you only do an octave or so, this changes when you step out side the box and do multiple octaves. I was taught by a sight reader who was very strict on which fingers you used, why because you couldnt keep looking at your left hand and watch the dots on the page at the same time. To me at the time it was a pain because i had been playing for a while and as a kid developed some bad habits but i stuck with it and decades later i am glad i did. When i teach my own kids i start them off the way i was taught, this is not a mindless tradition thing there is logic behind it of great benefit. Hope this helps someone.
