    A good exercise for the muscles that control your fingers (there are virtually no muscles in your fingers - it’s the forearm muscles that do all the work) is rather than squeezing a tennis ball or similar, is to put a thick rubber band around your fingers and thumb and expand the digits against the resistance.

    Aside from the comment above playing is the best way to build up strength.

    years back i bought a bass for that exact purpose...best fun exersize around, only 2nd to having sex

    Roll up some felt and wedge it in front of the bridge under the strings.

    You know what? I did all that once, and I found out the best thing is to just play, play lots of barre chords in the E, Em, A, Am, D shapes along with their Dominant 7 shapes up and down the neck. Really, playing is just the best way to increase anything guitar related, including hand strength. That way you aren't wasting time squeezing a ball when you could actually be playing.
