A good exercise for the muscles that control your fingers (there are virtually no muscles in your fingers - it’s the forearm muscles that do all the work) is rather than squeezing a tennis ball or similar, is to put a thick rubber band around your fingers and thumb and expand the digits against the resistance.
Aside from the comment above playing is the best way to build up strength.
Play bass regularly.
