    Hello all,
Can anyone tell me why Epiphone Les Paul headstock's are so f**k ugly? Why do they not use the Gibson headstock? it can't be a copyright issue, so why are they different? The only reason i won't buy one is i can't get passed how awful they look. Epiphone make great guitars, i have a Firebird and a Thunderbird and their headstocks are similar to the Gibson version, so what's it all about? Thanks.

Thanks. The cost for repairs/ restoration is around the area of a used Gibson LPC so there's no bringing this one back unless 'someone' pays for it.

I actually prefer the headstock... Less of an angle, better tuning, and I like the clipped corners.

    Marketing.

Gibson make them ugly deliberately to aesthetically differentiate the Gibsons from the Epiphones. If you want the cooler headstock, you gotta pay more. Guitars like Explorers and Firebirds are relatively niche guitars compared to LP's and SG's, so if they made the headstocks on them different, it would kill off what little sales are there for those guitars.

Making the headstock ugly on the LP's and SG's undoubtedly hurts sales too, but those guitars have enough popularity that even with the ugly headstock, many people will still buy them.

The JDM Epis have Gibson headstocks because Gibson USA's don't have a significant presence in the Japanese market.

I like the Epi headstock - especially when bound!

They had in the past, especially for the JDM (Japan domestic Market)

Epis History is older than Gibsons, they might be proud of it.

King Henry will love you, cause somewhen you'll spend a lot of money just for the headsock-shape

I like the Epi headstock better, besides the fact that Epi has been around fot many years longer than Gibson.

I think for some people that if the headstocks were reversed and Gibson had always used the Epi style headstock those same people would then prefer the one on the Gibson and wonder why the Epi one looked so plain.

The Epi headstock is just fine. It defines the modern Epiphone proudly, and I like it.
    Get over it.

I can't see anything wrong with Epiphone Headstocks (other than they make me play real bad).

I like them on white LP and with kidney bean tuners:

Buy what you like, play what you like. It is subjective and a matter of opinion. Have you emailed the company to find out why they are different? They would be the ones 'in the know'.
