I thought I'd post here since I have a similar problem. I can play a couple songs, but very very few. What I really want to learn to play is 80s hair/glam rock/metal type stuff. Poison, Mötley Crüe, Winger, Sleeze Beez, Enuff Z'nuff, Warrant, Quiet Riot and similar bands. I know it's awful and silly, and most people are glad that music like that is almost dead, but I kind of like the whole 80s vibe.

I know a lot of that shred guitar work is too difficult, but I was wondering if there were any relatively simple songs in that vein. Thanks for any suggestions.

Theres a lot of styles you can learn that'll help you gradually get there.

Start simple, ACDC and the likes. Moving into rock riffs, metal riffs, then the simple Joe Satriani, Steve Vai licks. It all builds up and then you end up playing all sorts of crap. Eventually you'll listen to a Glam Rock song you like and go... "I reckon I can do that!"

Sure solos and crazy bridges are tough but bit by bit. Learning your first "fast" songs can take a long time.

Wow, House of the Rising Sun was my first song too, unless you count the Peter Gunn bass line :)

I hadn't thought to try Enter Sandman. Thanks, I've got a new song to play. Let's see if I can return the favor. Have you tried Breakin the Law by Judas Priest or Sunshine of Your Love by Cream? Both fairly easy ones I learned to play and it sounds like you and I are at comparable ability levels.

come as you are is another good first song.. I learned that one very early, didn't bother to tune down...

money by pink floyd is another one, but the odd timing is hard to get the hang of..

sanitarium by Metallica (except the solos) actually starting out, I learned a ton of Metallica songs...

The Middle, by Jimmy eat world....maybe too easy. Drop D, and play only the Low "E" string and move on to others.

The first song I learned how to play was "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult. A very easy song, and I learned it only a couple of weeks after I started playing.

It's basically the open D string ringing with notes on the G string being fretted, and then some power chords for the chorus.

    Hope this helps!

While I agree about the Dylan version, the GnR version rocks!
