Hi, recently bought this les Paul standard hp. Plays and sounds like a beast! Absoulouteky love it! Just a bit concerned what it looks like up close! But far away the flame really comes through! Just wanted to know your opinion on this. Do you like The imperfections in the wood? Would you be bothered by this? Should it look that plain up close? Thanks.
And please no hate I'm a junior, I love playing guitar and have saved years and years to get this one!

There isn't any imperfection, this is great!
In order to see the grain it has to receive good amount of light.
With ambient light only you will not see it much, it's normal.

    And nice tiger flame
    Mine is similar :)

Wood is wood and no 2 pieces are the same.

Anyway on a plaintop it`s more about the "round grain" if that makes sense more than the Flame.
On your close up it looks more like a plaintop "should look" :thumb: (again, its wood).

My Plaintop has practically no Flame in.

Nice guitar, and if you like playing it that`s all that matters :thumb:

Flame doesn't look the same at all angles, that the nature of wood and bouncing of light (physics). Nothing whatsoever to do with any degree of imperfection.

You can 'fix' the flame like PRS does. That way it looks the same no matter what angle you look at it from. The downside is you kill its 'aliveness' and make it more one dimensional.

:welcome:to MLPF, and your LP is a absolute stunner. This holographic nature is what most of us look for in a flame-top, you did quite well!:headbanger:

It does seem a little subdued for an AAAA top. Send it back and get one that looks like you want. They are all beasts.

There's no such thing as "imperfections in wood".

I would think that a AAAA would maybe jump out a little more, but that is definitely a Unique beautiful guitar. Congrats!

It is very cool that you look at it straight on and you don't see a lot of Flame and then angle it and there is some beautiful flame to it.

That's a beautiful top! Congrats and welcome! :thumb:

The first pic and the pic where you're holding it look like two different guitars. I love that. I don't think it's a AAAA top, those are very, rare and very bold. I don't care what Gibson tells us, most of their flame tops are AAA.

This is a AAA top Studio. The two pics clearly show different flame patterns.

Top grading is done subjectively by the person doing the grading. From some angles it looks to me like it could be a AAA (maybe not a AAAA)... but from others it looks more like an AA (or even a plaintop). I LOVE that aspect of flamed maple (where it looks totally different from different angles) and find the very symmetrical stuff kinda boring and unnatural looking (even though I do know it's totally natural). So to me your top is simply fantastic! But if you were hoping for (and expecting) a super symmetrical BBQ type top then yeah, that's not it.

If you don't like it... then that's all that matters.

I think it looks great. The closeup has a nice grain pattern. What you're noticing is called chatoyance, cat's eye, 3D, etc... Some like it some don't. I think it sorta gives you the best of both worlds since you get a plain top and a flame top that will change with angle and distance. I think they did a nice job pairing up the top as they aren't bookends but rather adjacent cuts.
