Limited pics I know. But a few things worry me. Wonky G tuner, no visible "made in USA" under the serial. Obviously the knobs are wrong and the case and the pickups are probably not original. Thinking about buying this after work just seeing if anything else jumps out to you guys.

Quite possible that G-string tuner's screw is sheared off from the tuner getting knocked. If so, could be a little tricky to extract, fill, and re-drill. Other than that, looks pretty typical. Replacement pickups -- probably DiMarzios.

Tried this with your pic. I don`t see a "made in USA" . might be sideways. Instead of directly under serial#. IMG_1461.PNG

it is there or something happened to it......

I had a 76 black Custom that you had to turn 6 ways from Sunday and have just the right light to see.

this is what I've been looking @ the last 27 years
I blanked most of the sn, as I don't want it going downtown chinatown

After seeing ur pic and this-
I Got on my CSI horse and took a lil polish and a magnifier, turned exactly 6 ways under a bright lite, had my wife take a photo and low, there's
a cryptic message buried under that black lacquer

    IMG_0989.jpg

WOW, I neva would have caught that, that "m" only looks that way cause of the light hitting it jus right-move it slightly and you can jus make out all the font. regular room lite it disappears, as shown in first photo.
And that's just one more example of what makes this forum awesome,
Just when ya think ya know it, There's always something more/new to learn!

I have a '79 LPC (the one in my avatar).
    • My tuning gear looks just like yours (except for the color).
    • The truss rod cover is the same shape - but mine does say "Les Paul Custom".
    • Mine does have a vertical stamp of "Made in USA" on the back of the headstock.
    • The "Gibson" logo on the front of yours seems to have the same script, angle, and size as mine does.
It looks like both of them have been well-used over the years. Mine has been through a lot. I bought it new (it's a "single owner" guitar). It has its share of dings.

How does the guitar sound? How does it play?

Its a Kalamazoo made one - many of these late 70s Kalamazoo made Les Pauls dont have "Made in USA" stamp. Most have it turned by 90 degrees, vertically placed.

I wonder if tomh8 ever ended up seeing and/or buying this guitar. If he's still looking at it, he should make sure the he turns it "6 ways from Sunday and have just the right light to see" if there is any evidence of a headstock repair! Over the years, I've seen a few 'Made In USA"s disappear from careful sanding (to avoid/preserve the serial number), during a headstock repair/refinish!
