This is going to be awesome! I got a request from a member who wants to modify a wine red Studio into something resembling a Cobra Burst Custom. Wants to do custom top binding, headstock binding, and neck binding. No back binding, no diamond inlay, and no block fretboard inlays.

Here's his inspiration and the Studio that was sent to me.

You never know what you're going to get when you strip down one of these Studios. This is a nasty looking top!

I was able to clean it up nicely though.

Are you going to add a highly figured maple veneer?

I offered, but he wants the plain top. I'll raise the grain so it's much more defined.

I see. In that case I doubt he'll get what he initially wanted.

Not to badmouth your work good Sir - only your customers decision to go with a plain top.

@1981 lpc, that is my guitar. What I wanted is a twist on the Studio Custom models of the mid 80's. I just wanted that cobra burst paint scheme with the heritage cherry back.

The nice thing about posting the progress on this forum is that if 6pack Jon finds that what he imagined is much different than how the guitar is looking, he can make suggestions before the work is complete. Thank you Internet!

Has that got nylon saddles? I am a sucker for a wine red studio, but good luck with the project

@ Bum, it's Tonepros version of nylon saddles.

What is it you do to "raise the grain"? I like the idea cause I am heavy into plaintops.

I stain the top with a dark color and then sand it off. This works really well to show off a flame top, but it will work to make the plain top look more interesting too.

    Now that's a binding channel!!!

In this pic I'm shaping the binding around the body. I hit it with a heat gun and let it sit overnight so it will be easier to glue.

Its about time for a rate increase. There's def a lot of tedious work with some of what you've been doing.
