To the OP, as a leading edge Baby Boomer (1946) all I can say is "you had to be there". I'm sure there are folks of other generations who have their same seminal moments, but the birth of RnR was special. And for those that may have missed CBS Sunday Morning tribute to Chuck Berry, here's the clip from YouTube:

There was just something different about all that. Where it came from. For Elvis the Sun years were really good stuff. Scotty's tone,That sound. But not just him. Everybody was exploding.

I can believe it. I can't imagine what that must have been like to hear the real cutting edge of rock. Sure, every decade had something special but I would love to time travel and be there to see/hear what it was like to first hear something like Chuck Berry before you really had any kind of untamed rock hit the mainstream.

I got really into punk as a teenager and it floored me. I never knew rock could be like that. What it did for me was make me want to trace the history of rock, see who the ground breakers and wild men were in the early days. Who were the first bands and performers to really do something off the wall. It lead me to guys like Link Wray, Davie Allen, the Sonics, Los Saicos, and then to Chuck Berry.

I guess I have a real fascination with who influenced my favorites. And then who influenced the influence. So then I start digging into Delta Blues and just dif further back.

But then guys like you were fortunate to really see true pioneers of rock.

There are many theories about the origins of Rock music. But as to the origins of ROCK GUITAR, the answer has to be Chuck Berry. It was 1959 and I had just gotten my first electric guitar and amp. There were no competent rock guitar teachers in my area in those days. So I tuned up, put Johnny B Goode on my record player, and proceeded my attempt to figure it out. I wonder how many older players have the same story to tell?

By the way, I have not heard any news as to the cause of death. Does anybody know?
