This Les Paul Custom was purchased new in 1970. I'm trying to date it and learn a little about it.

The serial number indicates 1970-1972, so if you're 100% sure it was purchased in 1970, then it should be a 1970. In addition to the serial number, the presence of the Made in USA means it shouldn't be any earlier than 1970.

As I'm typing, I see that the pickup covers are embossed. That was a 1972 thing, so my guess would be that it's a 1972 and someone is mistaken about the purchase date (unless the pickups were changed).

Pics of the pots, a closer look at the logo/diamond, and the size of the volute would be helpful as well.

If we can get this moved to the Norlin subforum, those guys are insanely knowledgeable about the most minute details from this era and could probably be more help.

Thanks. I also read that the MADE IN USA stamp started in 1969.

    You're welcome!

It's an area of the forum devoted to Les Pauls made from late 1969 to the mid '80s. If the mods see fit, they'll move this there, so you shouldn't need to do anything.

if the covers are original it is not a 69....late 71 at best and most likely 72.

I recall embossed pickups in 72-73. They didn't last long. But HCT knows details better than my memory of back in the day.

It has been confirmed, via the stamps on the Pots, 1972.

    Nice!!

Get some good images of the pots. There are dates stamped into them assuming they are original.
