i had to remove a some wires from a switch, and in the end the thing was extremely hot. So hot that I had to let it cool down for about 10 minutes. I checked to make sure it was clean, and the mechanical switching seems to be fine. Since there isn't any electronics inside the switch, it should be fine right?

If it's a metal frame style like a Switchcraft it should be fine. You'd have to burn the phenolic insulators away to ruin it.
If it's a plastic housing like some Asian cheapies, then you could have damage. Borrow a multimeter and test it.
