Does Tokai make anything like this? If so, what is it called and where can I find it? I'm loving this style, but can't fork over $2k for the Gibson version.

    Thanks in advance!

I probably won't be that helpful as I am not sure if Tokai does/doesn't/has/hasn't.

What are you looking for specifically? The P90s? Wraptail? Translucent finish? I haven't personally seen any MIJ SG types with that kind of finish. It also seems like SG types with P90s don't show up for sale very often at all. Hopefully someone will come along that knows of one that suits your needs.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for an SG Special type guitar with two P90s. The finish doesn't have to be translucent or show the grain. I'd be interested in white, TV yellow, or possibly heritage cherry. I've seen photos of a few examples online, but I can't seem to find any for sale.

They're out there..Probably going to take some shopping and waiting though. Epiphone had something similar.."Limited Edition 50th Anniversary '1961' SG Special Outfit"

If they make them at all it's in very small numbers for special orders for dealers etc.. I know Tokai make a regular run wraptail/special, and there's some sg junior wraptails as well.

If you are stateside i'd just get a cheap assed 50's or 60's tribute sg from Gibson and then make it into a wraptail model.

I'm trying to think of others that aren't necessarily MIJ that might interest you. I bought a Jay Turser SG with P90s around 13 years ago. I know they don't make it now, but used ones might be around really cheap. I put Gibson P90s in it that I found on ebay or Reverb. I also have to say the bridge and tuners were not exactly quality parts and I replaced those too with the electronics. I also had the bad luck of getting one that had crummy soft frets. From what I've read most don't, but you will find posts from others that had that issue.

I still have the guitar and I enjoy it a lot. Mine is a heritage cherry finish.

I do have a white MIJ SG copy, a Burny. But it has HBs. Love that guitar though.

I don't know if Dillion ever did an SG with P90s? They may have in the early 2000s.

The wood is listed as Nato. Is that typical for Tokais?

It has the looks, but you guys are right. That's too high for a MIC guitar. I e-mailed them to see if we could work out a deal. If not, I'll continue the hunt. There are a couple Epiphone 1961 Specials on eBay, but they're $700+ with shipping.

I guess it's just a rare model, but it's crazy to me that these Specials are demanding such a high price. You can't buy a Gibson SG Jr or Special (true version, not the faded) for less than a Standard these days!

The shipping alone from Australia to you in the U.S. would be crazy. Tokai japan uses what i suppose would be called historically accurate woods in their guitars, their korea and chinese offerings don't. You might find another brand source for a guitar you have in mind on Rinkya if you don't mind used.

Yeah, in that case I would buy a used Gibson Tribute or Special.

Tokai only use Nato for their Chinese models.

I have a Chinese Tokai SG and its great. I used to use it as my main gigging guitar and used it week in week out for over 100 shows without any issues. They do need a bit of work though to get them to their best however and are a good basis for modding. I swapped the pups, pots, caps, tuners and nut. The MIJ version will have much better parts of course and be made with mahogany.

I agree A$900 is too high but bear in mind that everything imported into Australia is expensive because of our low dollar and import taxes. That same guitar used to be $500 a few years ago when the Aus dollar was stronger.

I would keep an eye out on ebay and Reverb, etc for a used model. One will come eventually. And not just Tokai, I would also keep en eye out for Greco, Burny and Bacchus, they all made SG Junior/Special models.
