3 years ago (not being aware of Richlite yet) I landed a gorgeous Custom that was to my surprise delivered minus an ebony fretboard. I was deeply disappointed with this but I decided I'd try to work with this new ......plastic, and lie to myself while maybe keeping an eye open for the same guitar one day with ebony. Alas the trade of my life materialized.

It couldn't have been more convenient that I was looking at my local Craigslist (AGAIN) and there it was - my guitar in a '10, mint, VOS, and ....ebony. To make a long story short, I traded my guitar + a little cash and made the dream come true - I ditched the Richlite and got my ebony.

I was on the fence a bit in the beginning because I was so hung up on my guitar's top and the fact that no pickguard was ever installed to cover any of the beauty. Most importantly, no holes. I got over this and though the top is not AS perfect now, the new one in VOS cries out needing the pickguard and in context, looks fantastic.

Some things are worth searching and waiting for and if the fruit is not there now there may be the day it grows to be. ...bye bye Richlite ....hello ebony.

    The End

    Well met good sir!

What kind of differences did you feel? Tone differences that you heard, if any?

So I'm curious, the dude you traded with, he preferred richlite or he didn't care about the material at all?

The MAIN difference is simply the feel - ebony, like other wood has a resistance and feel to it (mainly during bends) when you push up or down against it. It also provides a wonderful audio in that a squeek sound is made if you press hard against it as your fingers advance through the stages when the resistance gives. The tone is much different too - it sounds like wood in a sort of dull (in a good way) "woody" way while leaving the strings to provide much of the brightness. Richlite is all about brightness and doubles with the string brightness while providing no "wood" tone. This is fine on an acoustic where so much brightness is often lost but it has no business being on an electric.

Also, Richlite feels much like sliding you fingers across a matte pickguard - like plastic, slides with no resistance.

Sorry for the near OCD details but I HAVE spent some time with this.

BTW...how about posting a pic here of the one you traded so we can compare the aesthetics?

It was a store and the fact is not everyone is like us about Richlite - they just want a new Custom and might even see it as a modern marvelous material of science upgrade. Mine will get him money (again - I covered some of his profit the first time) and as a business owner it's only about the numbers in the bank.

I’ve never played a richlite neck...but I’ve read how some folks really like them...

...or at least they say they do.

Nothing wrong with richlite really, but if you are to have a custom, then ebony fretboard, no arguing about this point, just like a regular LP should have rosewood fretboard, not baked maple. I'm just really old fashioned, and many of us are just like that

That being said, I'm the one who bought a Norlin custom with some controversial appointments, so there's that lol
