Proud owner of a recent purchase 75 pancake FLG 80.
Played it last night properly through a 92 fender twin.
It is an absolute beast with monster sustain but the tone!
It's screams and wails at you and I've adjusted my playing style to accomodate but after 4 hours of playing realise it's just too harsh for my ears.
Potentially it will be a great guitar but the sound is muffled with gain, and quite raw and harsh when in the clean channel.
The sound seems stifled and untamed - it wants to let loose but possibly needs better pickups to bring out its personality and give some control.
So anyone with suggestions about pick ups to give it some sweetness and reduce the muffle?
I'm going for an chimey intimate clean sound with some warmth in the treble to a crunchy sweet high volume gain with some clarity in the rhythm.

They sound great , I would not change them for anything. I did put a roller bridge on it

Yours looks like a later model than mine. I've heard good reports about the VH1 pick ups but doubt very much that mine has them that early.
Any other pick ups to recommend? I'm thinking also of stripping the lacquer at some stage as it's at least 1mm thick and refine in nitrocellulose probably contributing to the sound restraint but definitely the pick ups is the priority.

Hi and Thanks for the reply. Probably won't be hunting down some period correct mod Japanese pick ups from a later burny. More likely looking to replace with new pickups from eBay - Gibson or Seymour Duncan or something similar that will bring some warmth crunch and a creamy sweetness. Balanced or unbalanced? Hot or std output? I'm coming from an acoustic background, my main guitar is an old d28, so wanting some intimacy with the Burny to draw people in even at high volume rather than scream at them.

If anyone's interested I've just purchased some Seth Lovers, when they get here I'll post some feedback about how they sound with this screaming banshee kamakazi dive bombing guitar i've just bought.

I was looking for some replacement pickups for my FLG 70, i ended up going with bare knuckle mules handwound in the UK, PAF style tones

all i can say is OMG.... that is 'that les paul sound' i really can applaud them enough they are the best pickups i have owned

Now you tell me!!! They sound great on that file. Still waiting for the Seth lovers. fingers crossed they'll sound ok. What amp are you using? I have a very clean bright and loud 92 twin. Original pick ups sound not too bad played through a 70s vibrolux but are HARSH through the twin. Nobody seems to know what will sound good definitively so it'll be some trial and error.

I will most definitely check out those Mules! Love that name!

I've got three Fernandes: two Burny's. RLG-55P-VGT w/ two P90's; RLG-95-HB w/ FVH-9's with another guitar just like it on the way! (I also have a Fernandes Monterey with EMG bridge and Fernandes Sustainer in the neck.)

I found the P90's to be much like you describe your P-Ups, sort of a harsher, more raw tone, but they; the guitar is noisy! The FVH-9's though sound great! Really like them, especially through the clean on my Marshall 50W combo with two 12' Celestion's. When I turn the volume on both p-ups near 4 on the guitar, you can hear them start to buck! The sound is warm with as much fuzz as you want, and if you get them up higher on the guitar and try moving those tone controls around your going to find a really good sound in there, trust me!

Vineham looks like another choice again! Might have to aquire another guitar with average pickups to try a few out. I knew when I bought the early FLG that the hardware was not as good as the RLGs but a bridge swap yeilded no increase in sound quality. Still waiting for the Seth Lovers

And the harshness has turned to warmth...

    A few changes though
    - new Japanese LP replacement bridge
    - 500k pots with bumblebee caps
    - Seth Lover pups

The sound is now sweeter than my brothers LP that he has tweaked over the years.
Looking forward to getting acquainted with this new friend

Thanks quite a unique sounding guitar. Gritty loud clean washy plenty of sustain with a really nice tone. Does everything right to my ears now can't seem to get sounding harsh on any settings so next the process of some dialling in. Do you have enough guitars?.?

Somewhere in the mid to high forties at the last count (including one bass). Three guitars are out on long term loan.

If someone could stage an intervention...
