I am going on another trip this weekend, this time the East Coast for 9 days. I will be staying mainly in Boston and Maine...hoping to visit Vermont and New Hampshire too.

I need advice about Maine and Boston mostly. I want to stay in areas that are safe for me to stay at and walk around, especially in the evenings. What areas should I avoid, places that are convenient to get public transportation if I want to stay outside of City (as it is cheaper). Must see places to visit, especially those that are not often mentioned online, but a great place to see.

And any tips please. I have not been to those Cities since I was a kid, so not that familiar.

I am staying the first 2 nights in Brockton MA, from there I have not decided yet.

Can any of you fellas from there help me out please...thank you :)

Mal already suggested that and to swipe a t shirt for him at the same time :laugh2:

Unfortunately there will be no playing or trying out gear on this trip as I still cannot play yet, due to my shoulder surgery a few weeks ago. :(

I know there is another thread about Maine, but I am looking more for advice on areas that would be good to stay at and places to avoid. I would like to feel safe, ya know :laugh2:

Boston and Cambridge are as safe or slightly safer than most large American cities. In Boston, got to Faneiul Hall take the Duck Boat tour and in Cambridge walk Harvard Yard. I lived in Boston for 30 years so you can PM me about other ideas, there is a ton of non-touristy stuff to do, depends on your interests...

There's not a lot of public transportation outside of the cities in Maine. One is better off renting a vehicle.

The Saco Museum (Maine) is currently running a historical exhibit on art and industry in the Saco Valley.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in the Fenway is a must if you like rare art: https://www.gardnermuseum.org/experience/collection

The Boston MFA is within walking distance: http://www.mfa.org/

While you're in the neighborhood, go to Yawkey Way and pick up a BoSox hat. Recognized the world over as the cool hat.

If you can get out to Concord, Walden Pond in the fall is pretty dang nice and you can see the foundation of Thoreau's cabin:

Also, it's touristy as hell, but the original LL Bean Store in Freeport is open 24/7/365:

If you're into the leaf peeping thing, Route 5 from Saco to Cornish ought to be nice next week. There are a couple of good spots on the route for long scenic views.

One can find decent prices at the Bean's outlet across the street on occasion.

My son will be flying out to meet me for a few days and we will rent a car at that point so we can travel to see other States and places that you need a car to get to. We will make use of that car for scenic routes for sure. I love trees in the fall.

The rest of the time I will be making use of public transportation and Uber to get around. Staying in or close to the City. Not made my mind up yet where I would prefer to stay the remainder of the vacation, but I would like to be somewhere safe and easy to get around. I am used to public transportation and walking from living in London and Paris.

I love to experience things that I can feel the local or cultural vibe. Boston is very different to Oklahoma :laugh2:
It's like when I visit places in Italy or wherever, I go and eat where the local Italians eat rather than where all the tourists go, sort of thing. Hidden places that only locals know is my kind of my thing too.

Thank you for the suggestions so far, I am making notes. :)

My only advise is not to eat a McLobster if it is on the menu at McDonalds.

Harmony, I'm exhausted and about to hit the sack, but I will chime in tomrrow morning. We live just north of Boston and I know New England well. Would love to give you some options.

    Peace

glad to see that you and your son are getting a car. Vermont and New Hampshire are a little ways north from Boston. the leaves on the trees in the countryside in those States may not have started changing color yet. however, you'll need to get off the beaten path(Interstate Highway) to find the quaint little towns up there. I've been to Windsor, Vermont and Claremont, New Hampshire. two nice little towns.

Do they still sing "Sweet Caroline" during the 7th inning stretch at Fenway Park?
