wish i kept my ds-1 after reading this
Only good when modded by Keeley.
the mod gives it more of an open, mid boosted sound, with the same fizzy crunch it has stock
The mod is simple enough anybody can try it, and if you don't like it, takes 2 seconds to put it back together. You can even wire a switch there to bypass the diodes if you don't like cutting them off the board entirely.
These days with all those boutique pedals floating around, most of us have no use for the DS1. Well, this little mod is simple enough for anybody to try and some may like the results and decide to keep the pedal after all.
Does it sound different with ONLY D4 cut, or ONLY d5 cut compared to neither cut, and both cut?
+1 on Monte Allums!!! Monte Allums Mods - Individual Pedal Mods
I have several DS-1s that I have modded to Keeley seeing-eye and Monte Allums Rectifier mods. More on the way to try other Monte Allums mods! His are a little better than the Keeley to me. Full instructions and a complete kit are Monte's product. Check out the sound clips there.
Yes. It may be very similar with either only D4 or D5 but very different than both or none.
I've actually had my DS-1 for like 3 years, used it one time and hated it. Never used it again. Until I did this mod that is. Now its actually one of my favorite pedals. Until I get a better boutique overdrive, this pedal has definitely found it's place in my train. Basically I use it to get more of a Marshall crunch out of my 5150.
I think it does. There was a video demo posted in a thread within the last two months with stock, one diode, then two. All were different.
Wait a second, I want to mod my Ds-1 since its my only distortion at the moment.
I have a few questions
-Does it matter which side I clip?
-With what do i clip it? Wire cutters? Sorry for this noob question.
You're supposed to do both but apparently doing just one works too, in a different way. You can even put a DPST (on/off) switch in for both.
Wire cutters will work.
Hope that helps.
The DPST sounds great in mine. I've replaced the diode with an LED for the Seeing Eye mod, and use the other diode on a DPST switch in parallel with the other diode. Almost sounds like kicking in the MOSFET boost on my Fulldrive.
Sorry, I misread your question. Don't cut both sides of the diode! I thought you meant which diode you should cut.
For those of you with valve amps, is the DS1 better boosting a dirty sound or a clean tone?
Personally, I think a clean tone would be better to sue with the DS-1.
But then I prefer the way they sound unmodded, so take that into account as well.
But if you have an unmodded DS-1==it will work either way--but probably better with a clean sound on the amp--especially if you're using it as a boost.
If it's been modded, that may depend on the mod you did.
I was just wandering that's all.
No problem--try it both ways and see what sounds better for what you're playing.
And for good reason! It seems like about 80% of users hate it.
