i've been using a regular 1st version irig hd for guitar amp sims on my ipad using a headphone cable to speakers. i plan to order an iphone 7 plus that has no headphone jack though, so i would need to choose between the apple lightning dock and irig hd2 if i wish to use the phone to play.

    any suggestions?

You really don't need anything, the iPhone 7 comes with the adapter. I still use my apogee jam, with AmpliTube on my iPhone 7... the only reason you would need anything else would be to allow you to charge your phone while you play. I usually have enough charge in my phone to play for a few hours.

The 7 only has the lightning port which the irig plugs into. Then there is nowhere to plug in headphones. The factory adaptor only converts lightning port to headphone jack but then you can't even plug the irig in. Seems upgrading to the irig hd2 is going to be the best bet
