Any telltale signs of what kind of wood this might be?

I find the grain really interesting on this guitar. I was told it was Honduran mahogany. I've never seen honmahog like this though.

My 2016 SG Standard has a big whorl in it just like that. That’s what made me pick it from the other SG’s on the Sweetwater site at the time. Supposedly it’s honmog as well.

    It’s mahogany.

From my limited experience, the grain reminds me more of some African mahogany varieties than Honduran.

It's Honduran Mahogany, My 2006 SG Standard '61 reissue had a similar grain swirl in it. Not all Honduran Mahogany is completely straight grained. Some parts of the tree do have rings that show up in the grain. I think it's partially about how the wood was originally sawed.

The African Mahogany is more like Sapele, with stripes running through it. What you have there definitely doesn't have stripes in it. That is a quite gorgeous Les Paul body you got there!

I've had a few backs that would look just fine on the front of the guitar. Then I thought I'd get one:

I could be wrong but I think that's tree wood.

    Pretty sure that's regular mahogany.

Yeah, it's mahogany....it's just cut in an orientation that shows what's known as "cathedral grain"
