    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi guys! My father passed away last year leaving me his Les Paul ! He was a very fine blues guitarist and had the pleasure of playing many gigs along side him as I'm a drummer, anyway over the years of him messing around in the cavity and changing the sound it looks a ball of solder ha ! pickups were replaced around late 70s early 80s for seamors Id like to replace all for new ( NOT THE PICKUPS) and do a tidy job could you please tell me what to ask for when i go to a electronics store i want to replace ever thing in the cavity! also Ive noticed in some Les Paul's the cavity has a foil tape or some kind plate that the pots are fitted to! what is the reason for this and should i do the same/ again what do i ask for?

    Thanking you for your help
    Liam

PROCEED SLOWLY AND WITH CAUTION.... Better yet be careful proceeding with anything at all. Be sure to salvage as much as you can of the original electronics this is a valuable guitar and if the original electronics are there other than the pickups it is worth a heck of alot more. I would even recommend searching for some period correct pickups to put in and then have an expert put it back together correctly including the cavity cleanup. This is not something you want to just wing unless you are experienced of course. You will not get what you need at Radio Shack regardless of what you decide. There are some great guys here that sell complete replacement harnesses with upgraded PIO tone capacitators and pots. Pics will be helpful!

thanks jworle, Where do you suggest i look for pickups and how much as i guide would they cost? I know my dad was ripped off by the guitar specialist many years ago as he never got the original pickups back!!!!! How do the old pickups perform by 2days standards , I would like to play this guitar for blues!

    thanks liamo!:fingersx:

Keep an eye on ebay for original pickups. I have seen them go for 100-150 each. Alot of good tones can be had from the stock pickups. I would say play it as is until you can afford to return it to original. After all apparently it was just dandy for the previous owner I am sure he would get a kick out of the continued use! Rock on my friend!

Well old P90's are great but this would have had mini humbuckers (same slot) Good enough for alot of classic rockers like Pete Townsend for instance.

If it was a '68 Standard it would have P90s, if I'm not mistaken? Didn't the Deluxe run the minis?

I have a '69 Deluxe with P90s in it, and it is a blues machine! I agree with Jworle - salvage as much of the original electronics as possible. If original condition, a '68 Standard is worth upwards of $10,000 depending on the market.

not without some minor finish work needed if you want it to look perfect. Hard to say anything for sure without pictures though. I say leave the humbuckers and make some rock and roll!!!

You seem a bit cheerful for someone who's father has passed away..Anyway's if my father left me a Les Paul, I would either bury it with him or put it on the wall as a tribute, Not mess it up or do mod's to it. If you want my opinion, Put it on your wall and make it a tribute to you're father. You can mod it if you wish but the sentimental value would stop me from doing something like that.

Oh HELL no! That is the absolute last thing his dad would want him to do with his old guitar.

Play the shit out of it - AS IS - that is what he'd want.
