    A variac$$$ is a nice thing to have if you are a repeat customer/builder/diy enthusiast. IMO it is not as necessary as the limiter$ for a new build. YMMV.

    Jealous!!

    Enjoy your trip!

    Nice! I've been tempted to pick up one of the Tube Depot kits for my first build. Seems like their instructions are very good.

    I'm curious: Did you notice any difference in sound between the Tube Depot and Mojotone guts? I assume they use different component brands and am wondering how much of a difference that makes.

    No, couldn’t tell much difference until I put in the Weber speaker, which made a huge difference. The Tube Depot instructions are very helpful if this is your first build.

    Ok, had some delays, and still waiting for a variac I ordered way too long ago. (Delivery set for 3/1). So today the sun was out so I broke out the Zinnser and went at the box. Been a while since I've done one. I have ~3 coats on it now. Might scuff it and add one more coat... hope to have a working amp by monday! :cheers: IMG_0572.jpg IMG_0574.jpg IMG_0573.jpg

    Ok, in the final stretch... my reissue p12R is installed and speaker break in is in progress. I also have a a 62 P12, a 10yo reissue C12N, and a G12-V30 to try. Planning to power the chassis tonight. :fingersx:

    I predict two possibilities.

    a. He's having so much fun, he can't stand it... we'll see him in days.

    b. There's a major ooops going on.

    Let us hope and pray for the former, but if the latter, may it be of low impact and easily corrected.

    The 10A125 is just not enough speaker for a 5E7. A mix of 10F150s & 10A150s would be an excellent choice. The 10A125 is under powered due to the small motor (voice coil & alnico magnet).

    I use Weber speakers almost exclusively in my amps, except for the 150 watt monsters where I use EVM-12L.

    IMG_0608.jpg IMG_0609.jpg Turning the big "six-ohhh" in July....so 40+ of learning lessons the hard way. :facepalm: But after raising kids and having members of the "younger' generation report to you for a few years, it really sunk in. The Zen state is the only state! (Or at least I try to convince myself.)

    So...on to the update. I'd say I am at 95% success. I went thru the power up process without arc welds or burn't carbon. :applause: All the tubes are in and we have sound. Two minor anamolies: 1ea new Tung-Sol pre-amp tube croaked 10mins into heat soak and produced a howl. I also have an issue with the NFB. In the position where the NFB resistor is in play, I get the squeal mentioned in mod procedure but the remedy (reverse polarity on the OT) does not seem to solve the problem. In the other two positions we have good clean output, with the stock position bringing the mojo, at least from a short test drive. :naughty:

    Now, for the voltages :io:

    They are high, as some what suspected. With the variac at 120vac, I have the following:
    PT Secondary = 380vac
    B+ = 380vdc
    B2 = 335 (Plate to ground same)
    B3 = 255

    More later. :cheers:

    Disconnect the NFB from the OT's output and see if the howl goes away. If it does, you're barkin' up the right tree. If not... gotta put on the thinkin' cap.

    She's altogether and working and quiet (no hum). I went ahead and installed the vintage speaker. Still need to get the NFB thing figured out.. 2/3 positions work including the stock circuit so I'm interested in doing some testing with various input voltages....after I give it good ring in the next couple days!. Thank you gents for all your help and dialog it's is greatly appreciated! :cheers2: Nothing like a little fruition to put one to sleep. Nighty Night Rabbit:thumb:! zzzzzzzzzzz
