Sometimes I wonder if Gibson has the same motto on their board room wall as the auto makers. "There's a sucker born every minute" All I know is my Les Paul Standard is better than my Les Paul Classic because I paid more money for my Standard.
I love the 498, but I never liked the 490 (neck) distorted, only clean. In fact, I don't like any neck pickups dirty.
The 490s are the stock pups in my LP and I do like them very muck. They will stay!
i have grown to love my standard with 490 r and dimarzio sd in the bridge position. i tried a few other things and went back to this. great combo in the middle position. ymmv
The 498T/490R combo with coil splitting is great for getting a very wide variety of tones out of the same guitar for recording purposes. My only real gripes are that I can't get any useful tones on either pickup with the volume controls below 8, and the tone controls provide nothing but mud below 7.
