I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these 2016 Limited Traditional Plain Top Lemonbursts, but can't make up my mind which top to go for (they're all pretty much the same price).
Therefore I'm hoping you guys can help sway me one way or another :fingersx:

I've always been a flame guy (other than my Goldtop) but have been recently feeling the need for a plain top burst in my collection. However I can't decide how plain vs how grainy to go for.
Generally speaking, is an archetypal/desirable plain top one that is as plain as possible, or one that has a lot of grain?

For a Lemonburst I think I favor as dark an outer orange as possible, thus emphasizing the burst.
That is leaning me towards the top-right one pictured.
On that one I also think I prefer the lack of long grain lines as well as liking the birdseye and almost quilt effect (any thoughts on this countering being an archetypal plain top though?).

I normally go ahead and pull the trigger without asking for opinions, but for some reason I'm hesitant on this one. And whilst I'm drawn slightly more to the top-right one pictured, I don't feel I'm drawn strongly enough.

I know we all have different tastes and our mileage may vary, but I'm wondering if there's a common opinion on this?

(I also think these were photographed under the same conditions, as the reflections and contrast of the stopbar, knobs etc seem to all match. Therefore I'm hoping the pictures are truly comparing like-for-like).

    Thanks in advance

Definitely Option #4 (Right Bottom Corner)

That type of grain ages beautifully!!!!!!

All of those tops look amazing.
I'm with the general consensus here, I vote bottom right as well.

Bottom left for the best paint job, but bottom right for the wood grain.

Option 4. I have one of these Lemonburst Traditionals. It's amazing.

FYI, if this is the same release, the pups in it are both 57 Classic, there is no Classic Plus in the bridge.

I agree with you on the top right-it looks plain while being interesting. The bottom right one would be second- but its mainly due to the figuring which is really the opposite of what a plain top is about. I just got a standard 2017 and chose the most vintage and subtle figuring I could find.

+1 for "which plays and sounds the best...?"

Beyond that, the one that leaps out at me aesthetically is the bottom right:
darker edge, better burst, more interesting grain (which, for me is the character of a plain-top), also looks to have a reasonably nice fretboard.

On that point, top left seems to have the darkest rosewood and top right the lightest, with bottom right having somewhere in between and some interesting striping.

Anyway, all other tonal and playability factors being equal, that's definitely the one *I* would go for!

I've seen several of these. For me hands down..bottom left. If you don't buy it I might for myself. Who has these for sale? Let me point out the ones I've seen look different in person than they do in pictures. In other words the grain will look more obvious in person and subtle in pictures through my experience. I like my Lemonburst as lemony as possible

That's a very fair point; the two left-hand guitars are more lemon-burst whereas the two on the right are almost light burst.

Overall, I'd probably still pick bottom right but I agree that if you were specifically looking for a lemon burst then the left pair make more sense. The darker fretboard on the top left would appeal to me but the maple cap on the bottom left looks a little nicer.

Subjective personal preference is such a huge part of this!

    ;)

I vote top right. The burst looks good, not as lemony as the bottom left but has lemon vibe, top isn't as visual as the bottom right but looks great and doesn't compete/distract from the burst finish. I like it!

Cool top but maybe distracting from burst... bottom right
    Most lemony .... bottom left
    just right..... top right!
