    Shanks info from Gibson...

Collector's Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul "Shanks" With fewer than 2,000 Les Pauls made between 1958 and 1960—the years of the legendary ’Bursts—any of these hallowed instruments is extremely rare and valuable, but a handful of transitional guitars that blend the ever-evolving specs are even more prized. As the chunky, rounded neck profile of the ’59 segued into the slimmer, faster profile of the ’60 Les Paul Standard, a mere handful of fatter ’50s-necked examples slipped into the new model year, and of these, the Les Paul owned by legendary music producer and songwriter John Shanks is known to be as good as it gets. Gibson Custom is proud to announce the release of the Collector’s Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul, an exacting recreation of John Shanks’s beloved Les Paul, serial number 0-0289. In addition to having produced more than 40 number one singles, won a Grammy for Producer of the Year in 2005, and sold more than 60 million records to date, John has long been an avid collector of rare and vintage guitars, and he now joins an elite group of passionate vintage-Gibson owners who have opened their collections and collaborated in the replication of one of their personal favorites. As with each guitar in the Collector’s Choice™ series, John has generously allowed the Gibson Custom team intimate access to his prized Les Paul, so that every minute detail necessary to recreate the look, feel, and tone of the original has been captured. The result is a truly unique Les Paul, the closest you will come to owning the real thing, and no more than 300 will be produced.

The foundation of the Collector’s Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul, as with all Collector’s Choice™ guitars, is in the premium woods selected for the build. This guitar begins with a one-piece back of solid, lightweight mahogany, which is capped with a carved maple top to closely match the look of the exquisite top on John Shanks’s original Les Paul. The result is an impressive reproduction of the incredible tonal balance and sensitivity of this unique ’Burst, sonic characteristics that put the difference between punchy depth and aggressive growl at the fingertips of the player. The Shanks Les Paul has retained much of the original red of the sunburst finish applied in Kalamazoo in 1960, with a deep-cherry edge fading ever so slightly to washed-cherry toward the center of the body, and Gibson Custom has reproduced this in exacting detail, using a custom sunburst for this guitar’s top, with genuine Aniline Dye for the back, sides, and the back of the neck. With hand aging done to match the slight playing wear, subtle checking, and minor finish dings of the original, every finished Collector’s Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul makes a breathtaking impression when you first lift the case lid.

The neck of the Collector’s Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul has been crafted from one piece of genuine mahogany, and carved to a back shape taken from rigorous examination of the original guitar, and attached with a long-tenon joint using hot hide glue. The result is a rounded and somewhat chunk but extremely comfortable profile that feels like a sweet and well-played vintage Les Paul in the hand. It is topped with a genuine one-piece rosewood fingerboard, with 22 frets cut from reissue wire. In addition to everything else that makes it so exclusive, Collector’s Choice™ #7 also represents another milestone in the history of Gibson’s solidbody guitars: it is the first of the series to feature all of the 20th Anniversary specifications being introduced by Gibson Custom in 2013, and therefore represents our most evolved recreation of Gibson’s solidbody electric guitars. Period-correct details include original style cellulose trapezoid fingerboard inlays, accurate binding size and materials, a genuine nylon 6/6 nut, the accurate reissue headstock shape with holly veneer and period-correct Gibson logo, plus vintage-style lightweight aluminum stop bar tailpiece, ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge, and nickel-plated Grover™ tuners, and upgrade found on many ’Bursts of the period.

To complete the sonic accuracy of Collector’s Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul, Gibson Custom carefully measured the pickups in John Shanks’s original guitar, and recreated a set of Custom Buckers wound to precisely the same specs. Details include Alnico III magnets and 42 AWG enamel-coated wiregently aged nickel-plated covers, with uneven turns of wire around each coil to help recreate that distinctive PAF tone. For look, feel, sound, and overall vintage vibe, there’s no better way to get your hands on an entirely authentic recreation of a rare Gibson original, so reserve your Collector’s Choice™ #7 1960 Les Paul today at your authorized Gibson Custom dealer. The guitar will be produced in no fewer than 150 and no more than 300 examples, as qualifying materials allow, and each will include a silkscreened brown Custom Shop hardshell case and owner’s manual, a leather-bound trifold Custom Shop Collector’s Choice™ #7 Certificate of Authenticity, and Gibson Custom’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.

CC 8 Bernie Mardsen's "The Beast"

Collector's Choice™ #8 1959 Les Paul "The Beast" Gibson Custom’s Collector’s Choice™ series is devoted to painstaking replication of choice original vintage Les Pauls. As a result, these guitars bring players and collectors closer to owning a specific, existing vintage Les Paul than anything else available on the market. The latest in the series—Collector’s Choice™ #8 1959 Les Paul “The Beast”—embodies everything that made the 1959 Les Paul legendary in the first place, in the exacting image of a true workhorse ’Burst that has toured the stages and studios of the world in the hands of a legendary rocker. British guitarist Bernie Marsden is one of rock’s true road warriors. As a founding member of Whitesnake and guitarist with several other bands, projects, and notable solo artists, Bernie has laid down some of rock’s hottest riffs for more than five decades, and his prized 1959 Les Paul, serial number 9–1914, has been there through it all. Through the collaboration between the craftspeople at Gibson Custom and the generous cooperation of owner/artist Bernie Marsden himself, this hallowed ’Burst now comes to life in a strictly Limited Edition with a maximum of 300 guitars, all representing every detail of this road-tested veteran, from its faded “Dirty Lemon” finish, to its patina and playing wear—and most of all, its feel and tone.

The process of creating a Collector’s Choice™ guitar involves detailed hands-on analysis of the original, along with intimate digital scanning and precise measurement of every output and specification. The exceptional accuracy used to craft Collector’s Choice™ #8 1959 Les Paul “The Beast” includes attaining similar lightweight, one-piece mahogany bodies and similarly figured carved maple tops, recreating the precise beefy ’50s neck to match the original’s distinctive and individual profile, and developing a custom-wound set of pickups that includes a Burstbucker #2 in the neck and a Burstbucker #3 in the bridge to recreate The Beast’s unique chimey-to-throaty tone range. To take it all further, Gibson Custom accurately matches every nuance of the finish aging and playing wear found on the original, with the result that the final guitars have been thoroughly approved by Bernie himself for adherence to the original’s look, feel, and tone.

In addition to being an uncannily accurate recreation of a legendary guitar, Collector’s Choice™ #8 1959 Les Paul “The Beast” also features Gibson Custom’s 20th Anniversary Historic Specifications, which bring the Custom Shop reproductions closer to the real thing than ever before. These specifications, introduced for 2013, include a single-layer rosewood fingerboard, hot hide glue neck joint, accurate fingerboard and body binding color, historically accurate truss rod assembly, and genuine aniline dye for the guitar’s back, neck, and sides. Further period-correct details are found in the neck’s nylon 6/6 nut, holly headstock veneer with pearl Gibson logo, reissue Kluson™ Deluxe tuners, ABR-1 bridge with lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece, Bumble Bee tone caps, and more. For player’s and collector’s seeking the look, feel, and tone of an exceptional original 1959 Les Paul Model guitar played and loved by a respected artist, Collector’s Choice™ #8 1959 Les Paul “The Beast” represents a rare opportunity.

The guitar will be produced in no fewer than 25 and no more than 300 examples, depending on the availability of suitable materials, and each will include a silkscreened brown Custom Shop hardshell case and owner’s manual, a Custom Shop Collector’s Choice™ #8 Artist Certificate of Authenticity, and Gibson Custom’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.

    Perry Burst

Joe Perry 1959 Les Paul Of all the great original 1959 Standards out there—a pretty small number to begin with—Joe Perry’s own Les Paul has long been acclaimed as one of the finest. The rich, road-worn character of this guitar, serial number 9-0663, is utterly moving, and it seems to throb with the wealth of music and experience earned over decades of being played on stages and in recording studios around the world. In Joe’s own words, “It’s got everything a great Les Paul is supposed to have. The neck isn’t quite as fat as, say, a ’54 Goldtop, but it’s still got a good, meaty neck. It’s not a high-output guitar, so it’s got a lot of tone… And it’s got all the natural sustain and warmth, and when you turn it up it growls.”

As stunning a tone monster as this guitar is, however, the story of its passage in and out of Perry’s hands over the years is equally riveting. Slash, Boston area guitar legend Billy Loosigian, and Eric Johnson have all owned number 9-0663 over the years, as it did the rounds through the various ups and downs of Aerosmith’s career. Once it was clear that Joe had made the shift from struggling to thriving as an artist, he sought to recapture his most cherished axe for good. Many years, many phone calls, and many near misses later, this amazing 1959 Les Paul returned to the man who seemed destined to call it his own.

Thanks to Gibson Custom and Joe Perry, you can now own the closest possible thing to Joe’s most prized guitar, in the form of one of a very limited run of replicas based on exclusive access to the original. The Joe Perry 1959 Les Paul was created from painstaking examination and measurement of the original guitar, and delivers the full tone, feel, and look of this highly prized ’Burst. It is available now in a limited run of 50 guitars aged and hand-signed by the artist, 100 aged guitars, and 150 finished in Gibson’s VOS process.

Gibson Custom has gone to great lengths with the Joe Perry 1959 Les Paul to create a guitar that possesses the very spirit of the original. The recreation starts with a solid, one-piece premium lightweight mahogany body married to a hand-selected maple top. The guitar is finished in an exclusive Faded Tobacco Burst with Historic “Vintage” aniline red and dark walnut dye on the back, sides, and back of the neck, just like the original The hand-aged examples show characteristic wear that authentically matches the playing wear on the original, while the VOS guitars display a gently-aged patina in the finish and hardware. The neck is carved from a single piece of quarter-sawn mahogany and profiled to a full and sweetly rounded ’59 shape derived from precise measurement of Joe’s own guitar, then topped with a one-piece rosewood fingerboard inlaid with period-correct cellulose trapezoids. A set of Kluson Deluxe tuners, a lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece, and ABR-1 bridge complete a period-correct hardware complement, while vintage cream binding, gold Top Hat knobs, and a cream plastic pickguard enhance the guitar’s vintage looks.

The Joe Perry 1959 Les Paul sounds every bit as phenomenal as it looks and feels, thanks to a pair of Custombucker humbucking pickups designed to closely match the original PAFs in Joe’s guitar. Each is made with an Alnico 3 magnet and wound with accurate plain-enamel 42 AWG plain-enamel wire to specs determine by close measurement of the original pickups, with a neck pickup that reads around 8k ohms and bridge pickup that’s slightly hotter at 8.5k ohms for plenty of authentic growl. Controls include the traditional independent volume and tones, with “bumble bee” tone caps on the latter, and a three-way Switchcraft™ axial toggle selector. Put it all together, and it’s like making this well-traveled, rock-history-making Les Paul your very own—but the Joe Perry 1959 Les Paul is only available in strictly limited numbers, so reserve yours now at your authorized Gibson Custom dealer.

Each guitar includes a Brown Custom Shop hardshell case, along with Certificate of Authenticity, owner’s manual and adjustment literature, and Gibson Custom’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service.

2013 R7 from Dave's. I couldn't be happier with this guitar. Gibson hit it out of the park with the new top and back color. The neck feels amazing with practically no shoulders. The guitar is very resonant and very loud unplugged, and when plugged the custom buckers are a big improvement. I actually have a set of Wizz premium clone pickups I want to try in this guitar, but I can't bring myself to take the custom buckers out yet.

This thing is super resonant and the custom buckers do sound pretty great. I have a set of Shed's that might be going in this weekend but it all depends on when I start celebrating St Patty's. I've already got me pot of gold lol.

Gibson Custom Shop Limited Run '60 Les Paul Gloss Electric Guitar Atlanta Burst (The Music Zoo)

What makes this Limited '60 Les Paul unlike any other 2013 Reissue are mainly three components; these guitars have Underwound Custom Bucker Pickups as well as TonePros long posts and studs. A s getting modern humbuckers as close to the original PAF pickups are the bane of any Les Paul aficionados existence (including ours), we really wanted to nail that bell-like (almost single coil-esque) clarity of the original '50s pickups. We found that under-winding the pickup gave us exactly what we were looking for; a lush wave of overtones that really bring out the best of every note in your playing. As guitarists who have played original Les Pauls with real-deal PAF's - we can say for sure that these are up there with some of the best recreations we've ever heard.

Next up, we gave the guitar TonePros long studs and posts; because it seemed to just make sense. The bridge and tailpiece are where all the guitars sustain comes from - why not have the posts and studs really anchoredin there for the tightest connection possible? You hear the difference with one strum. Lastly, we brought back the Version 2 neck shape from the 50th Anniversary run of '60 Les Pauls with measurements of .8/.925" - it's got the shoulders of a '59 with less of a "belly" in between. It's the perfect fit, if you ask us.

Also available in ... Lemon, Bourbon, Kentucky Bourbon, Slow Iced Tea Fade
