I can't even begin to articulate how special this Les Paul is. It has been the "shop guitar" at Victoria Amp Company for the last 15 years and anybody who's ever heard it in person can attest to it's sonic glory. The day has finally come and now she is mine!

One of the fine employees of Victoria originally bought this guitar for her daughter to learn to play on - when she bought the guitar it came with some non-descript humbuckers that really didn't sound all that impressive. Thusly Jason Lollar was called and he custom wound this set of "PAF" replica's specifically for this guitar. Again, the tone spewing from this guitar is off the charts! Furthermore the wraparound tail piece and steel studs are perfectly handmade 50's replica's by Steve Rowen from Pigtail Music who, unfortunately, is no longer with us. The Schaller machine heads are factory installed and do a great job of keeping tune. Also the tone caps were replaced with RS Guitarworks Hovland P.I.O.

This is the heaviest Les Paul I've owned at 9.45lbs but it's still a very comfortable weight and an absolute pleasure to play for hours! It is the best sounding Les Paul I've ever played as well and it's no wonder Victoria Amp Company used it to final test all of their amps! The fretboard is Brazilian rosewood and the guitar sustains for days on end. I haven't played another "Jeff Beck model" R4 but it seems to me 1997-2001 were the only years actually made to Jeff's actual spec. The only thing that is off, and I just don't want to change the sound AT ALL, is the pickup covers.

I think this is the best Les Paul, and certainly one of the most underrated models ever put out by modern day Gibson! Not to mention the color! Just dripping mojo!

    Nice Guitar.

Just curious but why do you think it has a BRW Board?

Gibson only made about 38 BRW FB Les Pauls in 2001. They were a special run for several high end dealers & all were R9’s.

I guess I don't actually know. I only know based on the way it looks, feels, and compares to the old guitars I get to play. Those who've looked at and played the guitar tend to agree. I could be wrong, but this guitar overall feels much nicer than a normal Custom Shop.

I sold my 2014 Wildwood Benchmark Series R8 to make the purchase and this guitar blows both my 2014 R8's away.

I think it is IRW from what I can see / know but it’s irrelevant. The main thing is you’re happy & it a killer Guitar. :thumb: :applause:

Never had one but always liked these. :)

Where did you get your info on how many "BRW FB" Les Paul's they made in 2001? I respectfully disagree with your assessment but like you said, it's irrelevant. As far as the overall construction of the guitar it's an absolute player's dream!

    This is a handy guide.

    https://www.themusiczoo.com/blogs/news/handy-gibson-guitars-brazilian-rosewood-guide

My reasoning is above, my dealings with Gibson directly & I have owned most of the BRW models, including one of the 38 from 2001.......& I have been involved in Guitar building.

These are not the only ones but these are the only official one apart from the newly released 2017 runs.

Looking at the Board in your pic I’d guess IRW but the pic is not much to go by. May I suggest posting a better pic front on inside & out. Not 100% accurate but it would help.

    :cheers2:

I called Gibson when I picked up the guitar last week to verify the serial number and all they could tell me was that it was a special order in December of 2001 but not WHO ordered it - it was not noted if Brazilian rosewood was used but the guy seemed to think it would have been. It does have a animal glue construction and sings like a real Les Paul. Honestly, I believe Brazilian rosewood only makes much of a difference in playability and appearance, not so much sound. It would be cool to see a build sheet even though I would never sell this guitar!

    I'm jealous....lol.

    Never had a 2001. I've had a '97, '99, '04, '07, '08 and a 2013 Benchmark Oxblood but never a '01 or '03 which I would love to have.

Big congrats on that beauty! I KNOW it sounds spectacular... enjoy the hell out of it!

Were the '97 and '99 your favorite? I can't imagine this guitar being any better than it already is. The Les Paul and the Telecaster are my two favorite guitars, and this wraparound tail piece '54 model is absolutely the perfect blend of Telecaster snap and Les Paul "balls". I haven't put it down since I got it!

Yes...the absolute best one was the '97. The '99 was great too but the '04, which was a special order top only Oxblood was a pretty close match too.

The only mod I would do to that has already been done. The Pigtail wrap and studs.

Other than the pickups and tailpiece, what makes you say that?
