I bought a great guitar here on MLP. I've posted some pics, but never done a NGD thread on it.

GuitarDater says we're having a birthday party this week.

I wish I knew for sure how this thing made it all these years, on the way to me, in the condition it's in.

That is what the instructions tell me to do. I just don't have the heart to do it yet.

I've even considered buying a new pick guard, and stashing this in the case.

Am i the only one who thinks the plastic should stay on?

It's going to leave a sticky residue.

Sweet Custom!! Makes me loath you as I once had a Black Beauty 1989 Custom..
And Jimmy Pages 59 LP was a gift from Joe Walsh.. That really makes it special.

I bought it here from GuitarAddict, but he was reselling it from another owner.

He was GREAT to work with. His listing was excellent, and explained a problem he knew of about the guitar.

** The reason I'm pricing this pretty cheap is because although the relief is is set pretty well the truss rod is about as tight as I'd feel comfortable adjusting it. ** It plays fine but needs to be mentioned. I bought it from a buddy knowing this because it plays fine. Otherwise it's a extremely clean guitar.

It may have been this issue with action height and adjust-ability that kept this guitar from being loved all these years.

When I got it, it played fine, but I did want to tweak it just a little.

I went to adjust the truss-rod nut. I found exactly what guitaraddict described... the nut couldn't be tightened. I thought... am I out of threads? Is something broken?

With the problem being disclosed before buying, I had no problem with the issue. Even if this needed some serious work (like a new truss-rod), I had gotten a good deal.....

... I went a little deeper. the nut was also very difficult to back off. I could feel the rod twisting, so I took it reeeeeal slow.

I wanted to remove the nut and half-moon washer, to see how much thread I had.

The nut finally came off (slowly). A peek under the washer showed plenty of thread. Thread looks clean.

What's not clean... the amount of glue overflow from when the headstock veneer was applied.

That leads us here. The nut. Unfortunately, when I did this work, all I got was a crappy out-of-focus pic.

This is the nut, looking from the top. There is a gob of 30 year old glue, that settled into the nut. THIS is what has kept that truss rod from being tightened all these years!

15 minutes soaking in vinegar, and a dental pick gave me a shiny brass nut.

Reinstalled, you can see where there is a "bowl" that the glue had been in, since a couple nut threads remain exposed above the truss rod.

I almost hesitated telling guitaraddict. He was so great about everything, I didn't want to let him know he let a beauty slip through his hands over an hour's worth of work. But I did tell him.
