    Hi,

I am currently waiting for a 1980 Les Paul Custom to arrive.
One of the previous owners has sanded it down, oiled it and put on bee wax.
Now it looks like a regular natural LPC. As I understand, it was once white/vintage white.
How much will this affect the value of this guitar? I got it on the cheap side, so no worries, just wondering, in case I do not like it and want to pass it along.

Will post up some pics when it gets here :)

depends on the rest of the guitar and actually how well the refinish was done.....

    what is the "cheap side"?

    refinish does hurt value.....

    Hi, thanks.

The refin is done pretty well. The original paint was sanded off, and the guitar was the oiled and waxed. Now it is pretty similar to one with a natural finish from factory.
I figure it hurts the value.. just curious on how much you guys think it will drop. Got it for about $1k.

without seeing it, that is a pretty decent price, if everything else is 100% stock, and you should be ok....might make a buck or two, but not a grand.

Yeah, I know, pics will come eventually.
It's done professionaly I think, so serial is still intact. Looks exactly like a natural one now. Darker back, light neck and front.
Think most of the original parts is coming with it, unsure about the pups and the tuners. Supposed to be the original pups, so hopefully :)
Only got a few crappy pics from before seller mounted back original parts, very unclear, will see if I can post them for now a little later.

Hate it with the mods, but with stock parts, I'd say you scored!

At a 1000 USD even without original parts it would be totally acceptable to me.
I mean, for that money you get a bloody well made guitar that you could even refinish in a colour you like. It's not like you can do any harm to the guitar by refinishing - more than what has already been done.

    I'd call it a small score :)

Hopefully it is the original pups, but we'll see. Not afraid of a refret on an almost 40 year old guitar though, that's a good sign :) excited to see if it is a stayer or not.

If you like it, then that's all that counts. In the general market, a refin warrants a major price drop, and since this one was also waxed, etc., rather than properly refinished, it will pose problems should a future buyer want to burst it or otherwise add a more standard finish. A lot of people like "naturals" so you may find a really eager buyer should you choose to sell, but in general terms I believe that the work that was done is essentially a straight devaluation. That being said, it is a nice looking guitar, and if it plays well, great.

Wonder what your woman looks like
Just talked to the seller. It was refretted around 1990.
Yeah, that is often the problem when finding good deals, they are usually not close by, and you gotta move fast.

Just looked at "Reverbs" prices for 80's Customs. Even if the prices are consistently higher than your local classifieds on that site, there are only a few under 3000€, and those are well used and not necessarily all original.

And even if we subtract 1000€ from reverbs prices (just to make sure that the prices reflect realistic sales prices) 1000$ is still half of the going rate for a well used Custom in less than good condition.

I just can't see how that is in any way bad?

As long as those fugly knobs and stupid P94/phatcat thing were in the trash..I'd even buy the husk for 1000. I have '83 rings and knobs and a mid 80's switchring..I'd be totally happy with that..close enough! (@Slashaxl, let me know if you need anything!)
Not as a money maker, but as a project/player/mod platform (NO extra holes though!)

I have seen WAY worse for a grand.
