Just as I expected..... A good musician and a good amp can make for good tone.

I like them all but I personally like the "brighter" sounding ones best. I even think the 73 sounds pretty good except for my perceived volume drop.

    Really cool video.

Very nice test by Johan and friends. My favs are '52 and '58 but there's not a big difference to newer ones. The test shows that there are differences but they are not drastical. With adjustments and (vintage style) PUs all instruments can be tuned to personal liking.
That is exactly what I have percieved over the years. What does this mean: You don't have to buy a '59 Les Paul Standard for 250.000 EUR/USD:cheers:

    I like the P90's Guitars the most............'52 & '53. The '58 was cool.

Having said that I think this demo could have been done a lot better & the riff played doesn't really represent an accurate view of each instrument IMHO.

    :cheers2:

Favorites from top to bottom, leaving out the run of mill units: '58, '53, '76, '68 or '69 (too close to say), the '99 surprised me, as did the the '08! I agree that the '73 likely needed a pup adjustment or had an electrical issue. All the others, while obviously Les Paul, were a bit lackluster, though there wasn't a single one of them that I'd kick out of bed for eating crackers! :naughty: Some of the differences may be simply attributable to different feel an playability. I first just listened, and then when I watched, I noticed the players struggling a bit for some of the nuances, on certain guitars, although I think they did a pretty good job of trying to play consistently.

For me the '52 was a hands down winner for the clean tones.

I would have loved to hear what it sounded like overdriven, but I guess that's for another video.

We will be pleased to help you, you should make new thread in Vintage Les Pauls (68/69s) subsection. At first, we need some photos there and serial number. :acoustic:

I favor the '58. They all sounded pretty similar but one or two needed pup heights raised to sound consistent.

The 59 sounded great, no surprise. The 73 was awful. Apparently Gibson has had some quality control problems over the years. Just make 59s and stop fucking around.

Thanks, Nauc. Very cool tone comparison. Controlling most variables I assume...same guitar settings, same amp settings. Of course player attack, fatigue, can't be controlled.

Many of us revere the first Les Paul knowing it's unplayable with that trapeze.

i read early tonal 50s gibson testings, they opted for radial cut (vertical) mahogany and maple cut flat for maximum sustain but later we can see that they would use any cut, lots of 58-60 guitars that we love from our heroes records clearly have flatsawn mahogany and maple. interesting subject http://www.abalonevintage.com/1959_Gibson_Guitars_Wilbur...

    I really like the '53.

Especially, the way the chord rang out on the first set of riffs. Real sweet.
