Is it me, or are there now about a million pickups, each one trying to "out-PAF" the other?

Still not fully decided, but whichever Epi I end up getting, I don't expect to keep the stock pups in there for too long. Enjoy tinkering too much.

So while probably not likely, I'm wondering if any shops allow returns on pups once they've been hooked up? IOW, could I buy 3 different sets, and return 2 of them after a brief try out?

    ¡Gracias!

if you're not sure if you'll like the pickups or not, buy them used so you can sell them for what you paid for them.

Sounds like a plan. And who doesn't like making ebay slightly richer every day?

How about these used Epi Slash Appetite pups? They must be worth a lot, since they have a rare defect: seems the factory forgot to reverse the black and cream bobbins for the bridge pu.

Those pups didn't come out of a Slash Appetite Epi as that model came with a set of Seymour Duncan Slash pups.

Those P/U's are Epiphone Alnico Classics, the brass base plate is a dead give-away. not to mention it says Epiphone on the bottom. They just happen to have Zebra bobbins.

Yep. Any idea what these are? Do they normally not mark them (with labels on the bottom)?

I heard that probuckers often (but not always?) come in zebra, but those should be 4-c, right?

Edit: SJM is way ahead of me! Still, do they normally put paper labels to ID the model?

The paper labels can come off but those particular P/U's are probably from an older guitar. AFAIK, the newer ones are all labeled. These are the Alnico Classics from my Plain Top HB LP:

Thanks. By the looks of it, you'd almost think they don't want you taking those covers off...

Wondering if there's any comprehensive research on the sound differences of covers on vs off.

Most people seem to think that removing the covers will give you a somewhat brighter sound. I've never removed covers so I have no idea if this is true or just people hearing what they expect or want to hear.

I'm starting to wonder if pups/wiring should enter the 60's(?). How easy would it be just to have a 6" pigtail on each pu, with a standard Molex connector or similar? Then the corresponding female in each pu cavity?

Just think, a full pup change in 30 secs + the time to retune. The problem with the traditional (3000 BC?) way is the hour lost between comparing B to A. I guess you can always record yourself, but doing that comprehensively isn't always as simple as it appears.
