I might get one in the future, but are these good and worth their money?
You get the one piece mahogany body and neck, that's true.
What do you think? Is this the black beauty to get?

It's the '57 Black Beauty which has the 1-piece Mahogany body.
The '68 has a maple top.

    well, i already know...
THIS question on THIS forum.. man...
all you're gonna hear will be : "68's are the right deal" !

i own a 57 BB and they are GREAT guitars, full of sustain, heavy, with a mellow sound...

what are you looking for ? what type of sound ?
If you're "just" looking for a BB with a long tenon, a maple cap, then.. let's go for the 68 ! Cheaper than the 57's (think i'm right on this one). You can have a figured top if you like it (i noticed you talked about a black beauty but...) and as it has been said before, 68's are more oriented metal/rock/hardrock stuff.
the last BB's (regulars without long tenon) are made by the custom shop, also.. and they're good to play. Not exactly the same sound, but you'll find less differences than between the 68 and the 57.

I really like the sound of my 57 goldtop (VOS) , but as I'm going to play hardrock/metal as well, perhaps the 68 BB is the better choice.

personally i would choose the '57 BB but like it has already been mentioned its down to personal taste and what sort of sound you are looking for...

I would suggest finding a dealer who has a '68 and a '57 in stock and trying them out..... see which one you prefer.

Oh billy, billy, billy .. Did you forget about the previous '57 - '68 thread already ? :laugh2: From '54 to '60, the Les Paul Customs had a one piece mahogany body. The reissues of the '54 and '57 have a mahogany top glued onto the mahogany body.

Either way, this makes for quite a dark sounding instrument that's great for some styles, but things might get a bit muddy when you crank the amp for heavy hi gain music.
The '68 reissue is more like your '57 VOS: mahogany neck and body with a maple top. BUT instead of a rosewood fretboard, you get a nice and smooth pitch black ebony fingerboard that really adds a touch of brightness to it all, so the tone of this guitar will stand its ground with the gain on 11. :dude:

Hei herra Larson, your name indicated you're from Scandinavia or at least have roots there, right ? Welcome on board !

if you already have a 57 goldtop, perhaps the 68 would contrast that a little better?
