Been home for almost 8 months, which is the longest I've been home since '99. It's certainly been crazy: I was home for the birth of my daughter, the loss of our friend Cyg, all the birthdays in my family (counting parents and in-laws), built an amp that continually blows my ears' mind, learned a lot, loved a lot, shared a lot.
But it's time. The bank doesn't get all sappy like I do, and they say it's time for me to make money so they can have money. :)
Anyway, I'll check in when I can.
Take care, and I see y'all in Feb.

Thanks! I was CG back in the 90's, but I'm a merchant marine now, working as chief electrician on container ships.

I grew up on the Great Lakes. You got the money, I got the time. :)

I spent 25 years in the electrical utility business. Wind, rain, snow and ice were everyday hazards of my job.

Of course, I never encountered ice bergs.

And you probably never had to work on power lines a few hundred feet off the ground. We can call it a wash between the icebergs and extreme heights.

Winter in the North Atlantic isn't quite so scary now that the Nazi U boats are gone. :)

That's a fact! I would love to go up those towers! (Not in the rain, necessarily....;))
And you might actually come out ahead, as I hear we're going to Thailand. :)

How do you get into that line of work? It sounds like it would be one hell of an adventure.

I joined up through a union. That was the easiest way that I saw.
Otherwise, contact a USCG Regional Exam Center, and they could probably get you started. They're kind of the regulating agency for the merchant marine; they issue credentials, conduct inspections, and all that stuff.
    I'd start there.
If you're serious, look up Seafarers Int'l Union. They aren't the best union; I'm in a better one now, but SIU has a huge training facility that takes you off the street and trains you all the way up.
Or, if you can, look into the maritime colleges.
