Early 60's JR value?
I might try to pick this one up, but I want to make sure I know what its worth before I even try.
Dunno the exact year... I'm thinking '63. Appears to be mostly original with no repairs. Sounds good, plays ok... Needs a neck adjustment but thats about it. It's in fair condition, checked all to hell, but no holes or paint problems. No cracks or repairs in the neck that I've seen. Pretty sure its still got the original dog ear p90 as well. Have to check the pots to see if they're original too. I don't know if I want it, but these things don't come up all the time. Very light weight mahogany too, around 6lbs or less I'd say. Saw a 62 on fleabag (ebay) for $4000, which I think is crazy. It was in way better shape, I'd say. I'm gonna play it again soon and make a decision whether or not to pursue it. Thoughts? |

Looks like this one, which is how I know its older than 65. Can't remember if it had the Les Paul on the headstock or not, I don't think it did, which would place it in 63-64.

It's got a killer tone. You can get so much control just from the tone control and minor adjustments to the volume.
I don't know if the pots are original, the volume feels like its wired original style, but they are really clean sounding, no crackle at all. If the P90 and electronics are totally original that will sway me a little more to consider it. Gonna crack it open today. |

it seems odd to me that early 60's Jr's go for more than early 70's Deluxe's, but that's todays market. If it's in good shape AND all original, $4K is not so bad, seems high to me, but I think a lot of vintage guitars are overpriced. At $2500 it's probably well worth it. again, if it's ALL original. one changed pot or cap... and it loses considerable value. good luck

My guess would be between $3500-4000.
They're super nice sounding through a ballsey amp. Watch the neck though....they are known to go bad at the joint.

There were some problems with some of the double cut Junior neck joints (from what I've read in my Gibson History books).

Hi all, new here. I happily paid $4k for a 1963 LP Jr at my local shop. It is all original and essentially a "no issues" guitar with only some finish indentations that I couldn't get to photograph. My rationale is that it's only a bit more than new custom shop SGs, and I think they should be a bit more than custom shop SGs. I don't know a lot about them though. Would a '63 Les Paul Jr. have been done with hide glue, brazilian board, all that?

I bought this '63 in 1975 for $175.00 I was in high school at the time. At the same time I could have bought a '62 SG standard for $250.00! I wish I would have picked that one up too!
I live in Kalamazoo and several of my friends had parents that worked here at Gibson. Everyone had Gibsons around here and I'm still waiting for that elusive '58 LP standard to crawl out of someones closet
