The orphan of all SG's

This is my 1972 SG200 that was pulled out of layaway for me on Christmas of 1974.... (I was 10 years old)

To this day I still play this guitar and is all original with exception of the tuners, I had them upgraded in 199x because the originals just ran out of gas, but I still have the originals.

This is one of those weird Norlins that has no volute on the headstock. But she's finally going in for a re-fret, full buff and the hardware brightened up. Though considered an ugly duckling by some, she has maintained her beauty quite well for 37 years.

no volute

Re: The orphan of all SG's

Awesome SG, I like the controls the best, it reminds me of a "Les Paul Personal" or a "Les Paul Recording", but yet it is an SG.

Alot of guitars like this people will call "ugly" or "odd" but when I see a great guitar like this, I think of a dog from the pound, "They may not look the best, but they are the most fun" hahaha, anyway sick guitar!

Re: The orphan of all SG's

I love these SGs! Only 2 things I would ever do to one: Have a custom SG "bat-wing" pickguard made as well as a metal control plate with a matching wood veneer or paint the existing one to match the wood. The plate just looks cold & impersonal. Nonetheless, it's still a bitchin' axe!

Killer. Those old low-end Gibsons are my favorites.

I have never seen pups like that on any Gibson. What are they?

Are the same single coil pickups that you'll find fitted on vintage Melody Maker, very good clean sound but with O/D (in my personal opinion), very ugly...
Regardin' this type of pickup and for reference only: the "early style" Gibson logo on the covers is a typical '70 feature, '60 PUs are without any logo.

Probably no more than a grand, tops. Did you check with any vintage dealers?

Re: The orphan of all SG's

If a VG condition SG-100 can be offered for $1400, then a comparable SG-200 should also fetch in the mid-1000's.

1971 Gibson SG-100 Jr. Junior Walnut > Guitars : Electric Solid Body - solidbodyguitar.com, Inc. | Gbase.com

A mere $400 - $500 difference in price should not stop any collector from adding an SG-100 or 200 to his collection. If you live, breathe, and die with the SG, then you need to own all the different models, good or bad.

wow, pricey. Honestly, I can't imagine them going for more than $1000.

Re: The orphan of all SG's

The vintage guitar market "crashed" along with the rest of the economy in mid-2008. Go to a dealer or luthier who is well informed about vintage guitars. He should have a "value book" like that used for used car sales. But make sure his book is very current. Use of a book a couple of years old will give a value to high for the current market. But values will increase with economic recovery (when it gets here) so I'd hold on to it for a while, if you want to sell for the best price.

She is one unusuall looking SG that's for sure...Les Paul Standard scratch plate, Les Paul Recorder pick ups, Telecaster style volume/tone selector.... I am thinking Les had a hand in this one some how (he always said he didn't want his name on the SG - but hey, doesnt stop his tinkering)
